On a night when America turned from blue to red, few states swung harder than Wisconsin, where Republicans experienced their greatest electoral gains in decades, picking up a governor, Democrat Russ Feingold's U.S. Senate seat, both state legislative chambers and two U.S. House seats.
A battleground state that Barack Obama dominated two years ago dealt him and his party a sharp political rebuke Tuesday, as Democrats lost ground with one key voting group after another - independents, blue-collar whites, suburbanites.
Nationally, the GOP recaptured the U.S. House and whittled away at the Democrats' big Senate majority, transforming both the balance of power in Washington and the electoral map heading into the 2012 election for president.
Here in Wisconsin, Republicans gained a governor and U.S. senator in the same election for the first time since 1938. This was the only state in the country where Democrats lost the governorship, a Senate seat and an entire legislature.

I was EXACTLY on with both my numbers and my analysis. Both Walker and Johnson won by IDENTICAL 52-47% margins. Both benefitted from huge turnouts in Republican areas and by underperformance of the Dems in their strongholds.
We have dismantled the Democrat machine in this state. We took two House seats (and almost a third), the Senate seat of Feingold, the governor's mansion, and both the State Senate and House. The democrat majority leaders in both the state senate and house were defeated in the re-election bids as well. NO state had a bigger change from blue to red than Wisconsin, which is why you will only read about it at places like FR and conservative web sites. The MSM will ignore us cheeseheads, but our 43 yr old newly elected Gov is a rising star, Paul Ryan will be heading the budget committee in the House, and Ron Johnson will bring his common sense conservatism to the US Senate. A day to celebrate here in the land of cheese, beer, and brats!!
The air is a bit fresher here today isn’t it? :)
Now we need that train boondoggle stopped and Walker getting economic development teams making calls to businesses in NY, IL, and CA and getting this State working its ass off again!
As long as the R’s stay true to conservative values this State could regain its once great economic reputation!
All we need now is a running back.
Although in Pa, the Pubs had the state senate half of the legislature.
With all due respect to your prediction, things were coming into pretty clear focus by 10/26.
On the other hand, my FRiend, I too made a prediction about the same time.
I predicted Herb Kohl will announce his retirement in 6 to 8 months... and that Rusty Feingold (or perhaps, Ambassador Feingold by then) will announce his intent to run for the seat Kohl is vacating.
We got both halves of the state legislature and the House of Reps went from 5/3 dem to 5/3 rep. We needed 2 state senate seats to win majority, we got 4. We needed 5 state house seats to win majority, we got at least 15! We got the everything.
I trust that most of Madison is weeping right now.
Ping. I bet you sleep until noon today. :)
Congratulations on the return to sanity. I’m a Sheboygan native and Wisconsin has been lost for a long time. If I were the king, I would worry about Wisconsin and Michigan next election.
One thing to predict, another thing to be right on with the margin of victory. And Rusty the Red may very well run for Herb’s senate seat, but I think he is going to dabble in the 2012 POTUS race. The left loves him, and the anit-war, illegal immigration, enviornmental wacko left is disgusted with Barry now. Russ almost ran in 2008 if you recall, but was smart enough to see Obama had the liberal wing of the party eating out of his hand. Now the ‘moderates’ in the Dem Party have been thrown out of office and the radical leftists are pissed. Feingold can play right into that anger with Obama. We will see how things transpire:)
Congrats Wisconsin!!! Celebrating here in MN too with the state legislature, booting of Oberstar and win for Bachmann.
FReeper Jean S worked her butt off for Walker. She’s probably on cloud nine this morning, sleeping, but still, on cloud nine.
Way to go WI!
As a Wisconsin voter and citizen, I am very proud of our state and its voters today. We recognized that our state and nation had fallen into bad hands and we got out and voted them out. Thank God for the goodness in our hearts and thanks, too, for the TEA Party movement.
Still cannot believe that the State voted in the kook Dayton.
If it wasn’t for the legislature results I’d have had great worries for my former home.
For the first time in a LOONG time, I am proud to say I am from Wisconsin—way to give the liberals a big dose of WHOOP A$$!!!
And let’s not give up—the other side never does!!!
Before last night, Michigan had a liberal dem governor, both dem senators, and the dems controlled the state house.
This morning we have a GOP governor (in waiting) and the house flipped as well. Neither of our sorry, rotten senators were up for election this year.
It’s not a done deal for google-eyed Dayton. Going to automatic recount as he’s only ahead by 0.43%. Hennepin County submitted their results TWICE last night. That’s a little more than fishy considering we took the state house.
Too bad one of Soro’s SOS is Mark Ritchie in MN.
Good job Wisconsin. The cheese will go down much smoother now!
I’m ready to sign up as an honorary member of the far west (Utah) Cheeseheads Association!
Good job, Wisconsin :)
Congrats to our neighbors from the north and sorry about all those cheesehead remarks ;-)
The line to sign the petition for IL to secede and join Wisconsin forms behind me.
