Cornyn: GOP would 'welcome' party switch by Joe Lieberman

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said Senate Republicans would "welcome" any Democrats who wish to switch parties and caucus with the GOP.

Cornyn, the head of Senate Republicans' campaign efforts, floated the possibility that the GOP might target Sen. Joe Lieberman (Conn.), an Independent who caucuses with Democrats, or another Democratic senator if Republicans come close to winning a majority but fall short.

"I think he votes like a Republican on those areas, and we would certainly welcome him or any other Democrat who wants to switch sides of the aisle and caucus with us," Cornyn said of Lieberman during an Election Day appearance on Fox News.

This is really stupid. Cornyn is gathering RINOs. If the Republican Party becomes polluted by a bunch of ex-Dems, that it will definitely be time for a 3rd Party.

It’s long since time to give up this fantasy. If he didn’t switch after his own party stabbed him in the back for that idiot Ned Lamont, he’s never going to.

The ONLY people that should be accepted into our party are those that are CONSERVATIVE PERIOD, NOT just "conservative" on fiscal issues, or defense issues, etc.

No f'ing RINOS and sort-of-conservative-on-some-issues-demonRATS need apply.

What's your major malfunction Cornyn?

Lieberman is not going to “Switch parties” and it is absurd for Mitch to phrase it like that. He should discuss how the Independent Senator may caucus with us if the Senate is close with the concept that if we had to grant him certain committee ranks, we would.

By having him in the caucus and gaining control of the committees thereby, we control the Senate much more than we would otherwise. Makes sense to do if we are that close.

Cornyn is the one who said ObamaCare repeal wasn’t going to happen.

“Cornyn is gathering RINOs”

Correct. And a notice to us all that the political elite in the Republican party will not go quietly.

As an aside, Lieberman remains who he is: a hawish liberal, with obvious Israel sympathies.

It is interesting to me that the Democrat party has become so extreme that a liberal like Lieberman could be ousted from it.

Cornyn, grab Sphyncter and Snow and the rest of the RINOs, and go skydiving. Without chutes.

I am madder at these fools than I am at the Left.

The Left is supposed to be stupid, evil, and duplicitous.

What's the excuse from these inside-the-Beltway morons?

Thats ridiculous. The difference between having a Republican Senate and not having it is like nite and day. With a Rep Senate we will totally control the agenda and be more able to cut spending. Therell be no counter budgets out there to compromise on.

We only need Lieberman's vote once; when he votes for Majority Leader.

The RINOs are circling the wagons because Palin, DeMint and the Tea Party are on the warpath.

There is no one more Conservative on National Defense issues than Joe Lieberman.

Well, it kind of depends, doesn’t it? Would he vote with the Republicans on most issues?

Liebermann supported Bush and the war effort. On almost every other issue, he voted with the Democrats, even after they tried to pull the rug out from under him.

He is pro-abortion. He is pro big spending. He is a Democrat.

I understand the wish to get another Republican vote in the Senate, but this wouldn’t work unless he completely changed most of his positions. Otherwise it’s just one more RINO trying the take the party back from the new conservatives who want to revive it, and helping to give it back to the hacks who have been running it into the ground.

We are no longer in a position to have a Republican Party as usual, which will just swallow everything the Democrats have stuffed down our throats. We need to renew our country NOW. Maybe Lieberman might agree to change enough to do that, but it would have to amount to something like a religious conversion. Not just a bit of horse trading.
