The first African-American president takes office, and almost immediately we see the birth of a big, passionate national movement overwhelmingly white and lavishly funded that tries its best to delegitimize that president, seeks to thwart his every initiative and manages to bring the discredited and moribund opposition party roaring back to life. Coincidence?
Not a chance. But also not that simple.
First, I'll state the obvious: It's not racist to criticize President Obama, it's not racist to have conservative views, and it's not racist to join the Tea Party. But there's something about the nature and tone of the most vitriolic attacks on the president that I believe is distinctive and difficult to explain without asking whether race is playing a role.
One thing that struck me from the beginning about the Tea Party rhetoric is the idea of reclaiming something that has been taken away.
At a recent campaign rally in Paducah, Ky., Senate candidate Rand Paul, a darling of the Tea Party movement, drew thunderous applause when he said that if Republicans win, "we get to go to Washington and take back our government." Take it back from whom? Maybe he thinks it goes without saying, because he didn't say.
On Sunday, in a last-minute fundraising appeal, Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee implored his supporters to help "return American government to the American people." Again, who's in possession of the government right now, if not the American people? The non-American people? The un-American people?
There's an obvious answer, but it's one that generally comes from the progressive end of the political spectrum: Americans must fight to take back their government from the lobbyists and big-money special interests that shape our laws to suit their own interests, not for the good of the nation...

It’s also not racist to say, “Please, Eugene, shut up!”
Tea Party to Eugene Robinson: Is that all you got?
Every time, without exception, that I rasie the issue of democrat vote fraud, the liberal response is ‘both parties do it’ or ‘they have to cheat some to counter the Republ;ican cheating’. It never occurs to these things void of a moral compass that ALL cheating must be stopped.
The most fertile ground the seeds of marxism/communism has landed on in the last fourty plus years is the mind of the American negro. As a demographic group, they have lapped up and embraced the lies to the point that “black culture” is virtually indistinguishable from the socialist ideals they’ve been literally immersed in since the sixties.
And we despise Nancy Pelosi because of...SEXISM? When will PMS’ token Black finally shut up.
Dear Mr Robinson, It isn’t about his skin color it is about his polices and his incompetence. It’s too bad you yourself can’t see past his skin color to realize this.
And there are so many good, honorable, competent men who happen to be black, to whom that distinction could have gone.
It is sad, an opportunity wasted.
Robinson starts out by saying there’s no evidence the Tea Party movement is racist, then he says it’s racist anyway.
Evidently Obama wasn’t black when he was elected.
Is that what Mr. Robinson is saying?
I was unaware that “radical Marxist” was a race...
I can explain it; He lied!
One thing the Obama administration has accomplished is making us LESS sensitive to the fraudulent use of the race card.
We know and knew we were not racists, nor are we a racist nation. Now we hardly care when some joker tries to say that we are. ((raspberries))
This is a great development!
Why is it that the people screaming “Racism” or “Sexism” or “anti-something-ISM” are usually the people who are the biggest purveyors of such discrimination?
Seems to me that the biggest “racist” in the O-Bambi vs. the Right argument is the former.
The race card is dead. People are talking about things that really matter, like jobs and the economy, and the national debt. Everyone who has made a living playing the race card is now officially out of work.
None. We also hated this SOB from the moment he took office and he's as white as they come, so you can stick your racist BS.
Besides, Dear Reader is 1/2 white.
Since Zero doesn't meet the 60% requirement for being considered legally 'black', it's very easy to explain how race doesn't play a role.
Amen.
