They have been doing it for centuries, but have been more effective over the last half century due to wealth that has come their way over the last half century from petroleum. They have been active throughout the world. They are one one side (if not both) of 80 % of the wars currently being waged. They employ terrorism or conventional warfare throughout the world. They seek and use weapons of mass destruction wherever they can. They hate anyone who is not Muslim.
