But on the other side, the History Museum was actually making history. Along those walls hung daggers, paintings and quotations from Vietnam's struggle with another rival: imperial China. Battles dating from 1077, 1258 and the 14th and 18th centuries were featured in intricate detail.
Putting China on a par with "Western aggressors" marks a psychological breakthrough for Vietnam's military and is troubling news for Beijing. For years, China has tried to forge a special relationship with Vietnam's Communist government. But China's rise - and its increasingly aggressive posture toward Vietnam - has alarmed the leadership of this country of 90 million, prompting it to look differently at its neighbor. Beijing risks losing its status here as a fraternal Communist partner and instead being relegated to its longtime place as the empire on Vietnam's northern border that has shaped and bedeviled this country for centuries.
That change of perception has led Vietnam to embark on an extraordinary undertaking to befriend the world as a hedge against China. And prominent among its new intimates is the United States, which is equally eager for partners to help it cope with Beijing.
"It is always good to have a new friend," mused Vice Minister of Defense Nguyen Chi Vinh in an interview. "It is even better when that friend used to be our foe."
The budding U.S.-Vietnamese friendship was on display Friday when Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton arrived here for her second visit in four months. Less than three weeks ago, Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates was here. In August, the Defense Department held its first security dialogue with its counterpart in Hanoi. Three U.S. naval vessels have visited Vietnam in the past year. More than 30 Vietnamese officers are studying at U.S. military academies.

Turn? Does the reporter remember that China and Vietnam fought a war about 30 years ago?
uh, the PRC and Vietnam fought a brief war along their whole border in 1979 and have had periodic artillery shellings since... it’s not exactly a new idea that the two countries distrust each other or that the leadership in Vietnam regards China as their main potential threat nowadays.
The reason Vietnam is opposing China,is because of China’s claims in the South China Sea.
"One common cause the two countries have found is ensuring that China does not dominate the South China Sea. Beijing claims the whole 1 million-square-mile waterway including vast swaths of empty ocean 1,000 miles from China's southernmost tip, and has dispatched the world's largest maritime security vessel to the region to harass Vietnamese fishermen and oil exploration teams. In July, after consultation with Vietnam, Clinton broached the issue at a meeting of Southeast Asian nations in Hanoi, rejecting China's claims to the ownership of open ocean and calling for multilateral talks. Eleven other countries followed the United States' lead. China's foreign minister, Yang Jiechi, left the meeting in apparent shock, returning only to remind the other countries there that they are small and China is big."
As I said the reason Vietnam is opposing China,is because of Chinas claims in the South China Sea

Another common cause will be highlighted Saturday when Clinton leads a meeting of the U.S.-inspired Lower Mekong Initiative, which seeks, in part, to push Beijing to limit the number of dams it builds on the Mekong River as it flows south through China. Last week, the Mekong was at its lowest level in recorded history, and analysts in Vietnam blamed China's dams, irrigation and hydroelectric projects for the drop
Making friends and forging alliances seems like a good idea for everybody.
>>> In historic turn, Vietnam casts China as opponent
It’s not all THAT historic, as others have already cited the invasion of Vietnam by China just in the late 70s.
The “inherited” US built F-5s chased away the Chinese MiG-17s, and the veteran NVA divisions massacred the PLA on the ground. In six weeks the Chinese lost more casualties then the US had in several years of heavy combat.
That’s not something quickly forgotten.
I was about to say - one would think Vietnam would be talking with Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia(?). Perhaps get Henry Kissinger on board to run the triangulation.
While Kissinger and Nixon could play the “China Card”, Hillary can only go begging to the ChiComs to play nice. And they can tell her to go pound sand, or they’ll cash in all of our/their Treasury notes. Heck - that is what she was probably doing in Vietnam, asking them to tone it down so as not to offend the ChiComs.
Especially not by militaries, which tend to have long institutional memories.
Yeah, that caught me by surprise, too. At first, I thought the writer was referring to war colleges or other professional schools, but Wikipedia reports 15 foreign students are admitted each year to the U.S. Military Academy. The other academies probably have foreign students as well. I did not know that.
‘I wouldnt trust those little basturds for anything,,,’
Who said anything about ‘trust’.
‘The enemy of my enemy is my friend.’
Studying in the US: Getting a Military Education
Each of the Defense Department academies can have up to 60 international students.
This is the VOA Special English Education Report.
This week in our Foreign Student Series, we talk about military education programs in the United States. There are public and private colleges and universities that offer military educations. But international students can also attend the nation's five service academies.
Three of these come under the Defense Department. The United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, prepares officers for the Army. The Air Force Academy is located at Colorado Springs, Colorado. And the Naval Academy is in Annapolis, Maryland; it prepares officers for the Navy and the Marine Corps.
Nominees for these academies must be seventeen to twenty-three years old, unmarried and with no children. Candidates are usually nominated by members of Congress. International candidates are nominated by their home governments, which pay for their education.
Each government has its own requirements for military service after students graduate. Americans who attend these four-year colleges must serve at least five years of active duty.
The Defense Department chooses more than one hundred countries every year and invites them to nominate students to the academies. As many as sixty foreign students may attend each school at any one time.
For example, the next class at the Naval Academy will include eighteen foreign students, four of them female. This will bring the total number of foreign students at the Naval Academy to fifty- three.
Tim Disher, head of international programs, says those interested should contact the agency that includes their own naval department. Plus, all of the academies have admissions information on their Web sites.
International students can also attend the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, and the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. The Coast Guard Academy can have thirty-five international students at any one time; the Merchant Marine Academy, thirty.
These schools have their own entrance requirements. The Coast Guard Academy says interested students should contact the defense attache at their local United States embassy. Foreign students interested in the Merchant Marine Academy must request application forms directly from the admissions office.
And that's the VOA Special English Education Report, written by Nancy Steinbach. Our Foreign Student Series is online at voaspecialenglish.com. I'm Steve Ember.
I guess I’m a crabby old man,,,
No way I would have anything to do with those people,,,
Waaay too much water has gone under that bridge,,,
McPain and Kerry have sold us out,,,
In this house we don’t buy anything from commies...
Unbelieveable-Frankly, I think the two (china and vietnam)deserve each other. Fire away.
Having been a member of the Students for Victory in Vietnam, I have some idea of where you are coming from, even though I didn’t serve myself (flunked the physical). However the war is irretrievably lost (to our great shame), and we must have a foreign policy that is in our national interests. Lots of folks hated allying ourselves with Germany and Japan, now we complain because they aren’t militaristic enough, and leave us to defend them.
You didn’t miss nothin’ but the heartbreak,,,
I was a big kid before I learned that “Damned Jap” were
two different words,,,(Dad),,,
IMHO Japan could take of themselves,,,
South Korea too,,,
I doubt Germany could...
