But isn’t Daley’s retirement a bit unusual. Was Daley pushed out so Rahm could run? Or would that be so Jesse Jackson, Jr could run in exchange for keeping his mouth shut in Obamagate.

There was some talk that Daley wanted the Olympics for two reasons. One, of course, was real estate profits. But the other was to call it his goodbye present to Chicago. He’s been in power for a long time, and he may think it’s time to relax and enjoy his ill-gotten gains for a while.

Of course, I don’t know if that’s true or not. But I’m rather doubtful whether Daley is the kind of guy who would ever allow himself to be forced out.

Who would he want in his place? Evidently he hasn’t raised and groomed someone from his own family, the way his father did. But presumably someone he can trust—or blackmail—not to spill any of his own secrets.

On the face of it, it doesn’t look as if the Chicago thugs are all that fond of Rahm. I guess we’ll see in due course.
