Maybe I’m ignorant on this, but aren’t copies these days done via laser printers?

Toner and ink would not be a factor, right?

A possible malfunctioning fuser in a laser printer . It is the heating element or part that bonds the toner to the paper. “Smudges” could be an indication of malfunction.
