Can skinflint Mitch Daniels win the presidency ?
Washington Examiner ^ | October 10, 2010 | MiCHAEL BARONE

It's an ornate office in Indiana's beautifully maintained mid-19th-century Capitol, but the 49th governor of Indiana, Mitch Daniels, is not dressed to match the setting. He's just returned from spending the night in Princeton, Ind., staying at a constituent's house -- as he often does around the state -- and he's dressed in a work shirt and jeans.

I've known Mitch Daniels since he was a staffer for Sen. Richard Lugar in the 1980s, and for years he struck me as one of the least likely candidates for public office. He's got strong, mostly conservative convictions; he doesn't suffer fools (and elected politicians) gladly; he doesn't care if others don't like him. All those characteristics were on display when he ran the Office of Management and Budget for George W. Bush between January 2001 and June 2003.

Mark McKinnon & Myra Adams are probably right : After four years of a White House run by two senators, the next presidential election may just be the year for governors. Mitch Daniels is probably one of the most qualified candidate the Repubs have. He has strong records as a governor. Palin ? Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think she will run.

Moreover, in 2012 voters will probably be more pragmatic than ever. Already two years and they are just tired of a so-called charismatic candidate - empty suit - hope & change - shriking - not-so-president. No matter the GOP candidate, bammy is toast.

Don't forget. History shows that apathy sets in, other distractions arise and results of politicians policies become apparent with the consequent disillusionment. What was the eventual outcome after all the baby boomer "youth" enthusiam for John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Gene McCarthy and George McGovern: Nixon. Not a charismatic one. And yet, he won (with Reagan) 49 states in 1972.

And like Peter Ferrara, I see the The Coming Resignation of Barack Obama.

So far I like both Daniels and/or Barbour as our GOP nominee 2012.

Mike Pence would have been a really good choice too. But he needs time. He is not even Senator.

Daniels is a Bush flunky & wants to ditch social issues under the false pretense that fiscal issues will solve the former. No thanks. He has no fire in the belly to do what's needed in fumigating the Obama administration. And he is not telegenic.

We need someone who has been raked through the coals. Someone who has been through the fire and has battled corruption and cronyism in both parties. Daniels is not that person.

The rules are different now. He is in House leadership, and he has real media experience. He's earned the right to make his case and get a serious hearing.

He kind of looks like Calvin Coolidge.

I think I like Haley Barbour better but the Cato Institute just recent gave him a C on fiscal poilcy.

Love Palin but have serious doubts about her electability (I know, I know...they said that about Reagan too but Sarah has been savaged by the media like no other. Her cred with independents may be shot.)

We shall see.

Of course, he is not telegenic. Even Barone said so. But, again, enough of telegenic elections. We need qualified candidates.

OK by me. Mitch is a good guy and has done wonders with the Indiana budget.

That's right. She has been savaged by the media. And even her supporters said it : Trace Adkins on Palin Running For President: "I Hope Not...I Love Her To Death But She Can't Win, She's Become a Punchline"

Christie might allow Jersey to be carried as a Veep candidate. Daniels might allow Indiana (almost a must win) to be carried as a veep candidate. Both are good on the fiscal issues as well it seems; not Bush clones.

No. He’s my Gov. And I voted for him, but I don’t want him as Pres.

Still haven’t forgiven him for DST in Indy.

We need qualified candidates

What do you mean "qualified" candidates?
Governor Palin was selected to be VP but she's not good enough to be President in her own right?
She has been a Mayor, a state regulator, and a Governor, and would have completed her term had the haters left her alone.
She is also a small business owner.

So please explain to me what you mean by "qualified." Because she has been going toe-to-toe attacking the Obama administration.
You want another bland, pleasant "moderate" Republican that the media will initially declare is "formidable" but when the nomination happen the same media will gut like a catfish.

Well, who is the best, then ?

As of right now, only Governor Palin is the only potential GOP candidate who is willing to fight for conservatism and can take on the leftists.
