MARIETTA, Ga. - The mother of one of two boys charged with the brutual beating of a 94-year old man is speaking about the case.
At her son's hearing Friday morning in Cobb County, the mother of the 11-year old accused of attacking World War Two veteran Paul Smallwood says her son didn't do it.
The mother called her son a bystander watching.
Earlier during the hearing, attorneys for the two boys accused of beating Smallwood entered not guilty pleas.
The two boys -- 11 and 15-years old -- were in court earlier this week when the judge decided there was enough evidence to hold them. Thursday it was learned part of that evidence includes surveillance video of the two kids just before the elderly man was attacked.
"I hate to see anyone in trouble but anyone do something like that they need to be behind bars," said Paul Smallwood's nephew Ricky Scoggins.
The boys were arrested earlier this week. During a court appearance for the 15-year old Thursday, Cobb detectives said Mr. Smallwood was in his apartment when two boys broke in, beat him, and robbed him.
"Mr. Smallwood says someone struck him in the head with a rock. He fell, then they struck him again," said Cobb Police Officer D. L. Ponte, Jr.
Police say they have surveillance video from a Texaco station shortly before the attack showing the suspects riding bicycles heading toward the Smallwood's home.
Police searched the 15-year old's home and say they found a weapon in his room.
"During the execution of a search warrant we located a 410 gauge shot gun under the suspect's bed and mattress," said Ponte.
Police told the court, the teen who was expelled from Sprayberry High School for an incident earlier this year, bragged about detectives finding the gun.
"Sgt. Pluckett of our gang unit advised that this juvenile was bragging on myspace and Facebook that I had just taken a shotgun from under his mattress," said Ponte.
There was no further social networking for this teen since the judge ordered him to remain in juvenile detention rather than be released on house arrest saying he was a threat to the community and himself.
Smallwood is reported to be in stable condition
As always when some young thug is caught, his (momma, aunts, grandmother - pick one or more) starts carrying on about how he didn't do it, what a good boy he is, etc. You've all heard it many times befo. And again as always here is the momma stepping up to fit the pattern. I suspect section 8 housing here.
Smallwood (the victim) is still in the hospital. His prognosis is unknown. I also notice that the only place I was able to learn that the thugs were black was on the radio. Apparently the news reader forgot that only whaite criminals are to be identificed by race.
he such a good boy
East metro here, I only knew the boys were black from common sense and then from seeing their hands on tv when their faces couldnt be shown due to their ages. I havent heard any announcer say they were black.
This article as you said severely understates the severity of the crime and the savage beating this old man received with a large rock. He lingers in a semi twilight state between life and death while his attackers cry and whine about how innocent they are and their mama’s. aunties, grandmamas, etc all whine as well.
BTW, once again there is no hate crime here, clearly no hate involved.......
Prayers for Paul Smallwood and that justice will prevail.
The mothers really do love their sons and keep hoping that this son will be different than the thugs and takers around them that prey on the women for money and sex and give nothing back.
But one of the major issues is there is a dearth of grown men around to set the example.
A parent once said this to me after his teenage son walked into my yard and punched my 8 year old daughter in the face to impress his friends.
I would have seen that kid in jail if he did that to my 8 yr old daughter. A huge sign of trouble coming for that boy.
peachesOct 1 MY PRAYS ARE WITH YU MRS. RENNEE I KNOW HE AINT DO IT EITHER I ♥ YALL ILL KEEP ALL OF YALL IN PRAYERS AND OD WILL MAKE A WAYand this gem
Regina RobinsonOct 1 First of all it shouldn't matter if he was a war veteran or not, would it had been ok if he was a homeless man on the street. Secondly an 11 year old can't stop a 15 year old. Thirdly unless you were the picture perfect kid I know you did something that your parents did not approve of, and hung around some people they did not like. An 11 year old boy should not be treated as a teenager.I wonder if she'd be as tolerant if a couple of white boys beat a black man nearly to death.
When stories such as this air on the radio the race of the perp is omitted with instuctions to visit their(radio station} website.By then we can, with 90% certainty, usually guess the race.Just look at mugshots.com of your local police to see who is commiting the majority of the crime. You wont be surprised.
He bees inacent. This was obviously a hate crime. That old white man did everything he could to get those poor innocent black youts in trouble. Grabbed dat rock an hits hissef in the haid jest to gets dem boys in trouble.
He was just watching so he could learn how to beat an old man with a rock.
These two need to be introduced to a “CRACKER”.
And American society continues to decline. Not my fault.
I bed to differ. There are too MANY grown men setting the example. Notice I didn't say good grown men - just men.
These boys have watched the "men" in their fetid neighborhood their whole lives and have seen the example of what race based socialism has done and they simply followed the example set for them.
If the media REALLY reported on the absolute disparity of black on white crime compared to the white on black crime statitics, hell would break loose in America and it would be aimed at the ‘hood.
This may be a racist statement but too many of us have seen the ridicoulous amount of crime directed at white folks out of pure hate and the total media blackout on such crime.
Gosh, ma'am, how did he happen to be "bystanding" in the man's apartment while his buddy was bashing in the guy's face with a rock?
I heard on the radio that the 11 yo was released into the custody of his parent. The 15 yo remains in juvenile detention. I’m guessing that the 11 yo will get a slap on the wrist, and that the 15 yo will get a harder slap on the wrist, and that the 15 yo will be back on the street before the 4th of July. The 11 yo will probably be back before christmas.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If your elderly and live in an area like this you should carry a gun.
I agree with one slight modification "If you live in an area like this you should carry a gun."
