West Virginia Senate: Raese (R) Eases Ahead of Manchin (D)
Rasmussen Reports ^ | September 28, 2010

Republican John Raese has edged ahead of West Virginia’s popular Democratic Governor Joe Manchin for the first time in the state’s special U.S. Senate race.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely West Virginia Voters finds Raese earning 48% support to Manchin’s 46% when leaners are included. Two percent (5%) prefer some other candidate, and four percent (4%) are undecided.

These findings move the contest from Solid Democratic to a Toss-Up in the Rasmussen Reports Election 2010 Senate Balance of Power rankings.

Which is why I tell everyone, "Joe's been a good governor. Even as a conservative I have to admit that. Which is why I want to keep him doing that good job in the governor's office."

Exactly the angle Raese should take. Raese can leverage Manchin's popularity to his own advantage by doing so.

There is also this ongoing court fight on whether to have the Senate special election ballot separate from the general election ballot.

http://theintermountain.com/page/content.detail/id/118872/Judge-rejects-GOP-challenge-of-W-Va—ballot-.html?isap=1&nav=5023

WV has a “straight ticket” choice at the start of its ballot. In it, one can mark either D or R and your voting is finished.

The RCP “no tossups” now shows GOP at 49.

SO....if we beat Reid, that puts the Senate at even 50 50.

Then, all we need is for WA to come through, or, even more likely, for CT to come through....and today, Blumenthal is ahead of McMahon by ONLY 3.

The Senate looks very doable.

And that is without Delaware!

(Keeping in mind, that the Dems keep spending tiem and money telling us how O’Donnell HAS NO CHANCE!...heh heh heh).

Bush won WV twice. It’s not a red state.

Nor is it a blue state.

Manchin will lose.

When did WV last have a GOP senator?

Yeah, that’s right...they only break out their fancy infallible vote fraud machines for the non-presidential elections.

As for your ‘when was the last time’ argument, look to Massachusetts to see just how idiotic it is.

This is the second poll that confirms Raese moving ahead of Manchin. You may not like it, but it’s what the polls are showing. Deal with it.

"Actually, as a governor, he's about as good as any Dem will ever be."

And there's a lot of Democrats out there who are just like that in their own state. However, once it gets to the Federal level, Manchin would vote however Harry Reid/Chuck Shumer want him to vote. We have seen this time and again over the last 2 years. I think the West Virginia voters are singing a lot of "The Who" lately. "Won't Get Fooled Again"....

One other thing that is important about this race, whoever wins it gets immediately seated in the lame duck session...

Manchin and the Dems biggest problem is the Kenyan. Maybe the people in WV are waking up.

That’s an unfair way to try to pigeonhole the point, as if the partisan make up of the Senate delegation makes a state “red” or “blue”.

And it is especially not to the point because Jay Rockefeller has served in the Senate, if my memory is correct, since sometime in the mid’80’s. Byrd’s tenure began sometime in the 1800’s. So...that’s not all that apt.

I do believe the state had a Republican governor sometime during the Bush years. And as already noted, Bush won the state twice.

It is not a blue state.

It is not a red state.

It is somewhere in between.

And Manchin is going to lose.

(WV reminds me of a salty friend I have who once told me, “I may not be a Republican. But I damn sure ain’t no Democrat!” So long as the Democrat party is the Obama party, I would wager that WV will say, loudly and clearly, I DAMN SURE AINT NO DEMOCRAT!)

West Virginians HATE Obama. Obama’s disapproval rating in West Virginia is one of the highest in the Nation.

I'm a native West Virginian now living in Pennsylvania and I'll second that!

I’m sure Raese would enjoy the cash but he doesn’t really need it. I met him when he and McKinley opened the University Ave. campaign office in Morgantown and he is a real conservative businessman. Manchin is in big trouble. if people want to send money to races they should support.

When did they last have a Senator not named Byrd or Rockefeller?

They haven't had somebody named Byrd or Rockefeller on the senate ticket since before Reagan was president.

Capturing the Senate is back on the radar. Another freeper correctly pointed out that Manchin’s problem is that he is wholly known. At this point out it’s going to be harder for him to win. I’ve got to give Raese the edge.

Manchin is in big trouble if 4% are undecided. Undecideds always go for the challenger. As a popular governor, Manchin is considered an incumbent. So, give Manchin 1% of that 4% and add another 3% to Raese’s total.

Come on WV FReepers, keep up the great work. Make it happen for the GOP to take “Robert Byrd’s Seat”....
