Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will announce on Tuesday a U.S. contribution of more than $50 million toward providing clean cooking stoves in developing countries to reduce deaths from smoke inhalation and fight climate change.
The U.S. funding, which will be spread over five years, is part of a Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves being started to combat a problem officials equate with mal More..aria and unclean water in terms of their health impact worldwide.
Some 1.9 million premature deaths, mostly among women and young children, occur every year due to smoke inhalation from rudimentary stoves, which in many cases consist of a few stones and an open fire inside or outside a shelter, officials said.
Smoke from such cooking methods can lead to childhood pneumonia, lung cancer, bronchitis and cardiovascular disease while contributing to climate change through emissions of carbon dioxide and methane -- two major greenhouse gases -- and black carbon.
The new alliance to combat the issue groups U.S. government agencies with the United Nations Foundation, Germany, Peru, Norway, the World Health Organization and corporate backers including Morgan Stanley and Shell, among others.
"This is something that touches on climate, on health, on women's empowerment, on deforestation and on poverty," Reid Detchon, vice president for energy and climate at the United Nations Foundation, said in an interview.
He said the group would seek to create a market for cleaner, less-polluting stoves and fuels to supply some 500 million households worldwide now using inefficient and dangerous cooking methods.
India, south Asia and sub-Saharan Africa were areas in which the problem was most acute.
"You're not going to solve this problem with aid alone," he said. "You're going to have to create a thriving cookstove industry that can supply both stoves and fuels that people want and need."
Better technology is available at affordable prices. More efficient stoves can be purchased for $10 to $100, according to one senior U.S. administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of Clinton's funding announcement.
Doing away with subsidies and focusing on a market-based approach was part of a focused development strategy the alliance hoped would prove more effective than previous attempts to address the problem in the past, he said.
Wouldn’t if be nice if these stoves were at least manufactured in the USA
OK.....we could have given an American stove maker a full tax credit to manufacture, and then give away these stoves. But THAT would have created American jobs, and Obama would never have any part of that.
Put a man in a stove, and he will be heated for the rest of his life.
Seriously now, where in Article 1 Section 8 is the provision for cooking stoves outside the US, let alone within. More wealth transfer, out of the US, for the most unconstitutional regime in US history.
These progressives/socialists/totalitarians/enemies within aren’t too brilliant, Brilliant. Thanks for posting (and the pic...priceless)
The “developing countries” ploy again? Send them a pocket copy of our constitution.
It’s 2010. Time for foreign parasites to stand up on their own or shut up.
It’s just one more way these marxists force us to accept redistribution of wealth from those who work for it to those who whine and moan.
Hey! I am paying for this! I want a new stove!
You foreigners need to go to the back of the line!
Next up...’green’ fire extinguishers and an enlargement of the Peace Corps for safe stove operation trainers.
Never underestimate the stupidity of the State Department. No doubt you will be able to purchase these stoves on the “black market” in another country.
Will someone check and see if Hillary’s two brothers (Huge and fatso) have cornered the stove market and need to unload now to make a really nifty profit.
Corruption and black market issues aside, did Hilary give any thought as to how useful new stoves are going to be where there are no power plants and no gas lines?
Also, if I go along with the whole “global warming” meme, does it really reduce a carbon footprint to switch people from using wood, which comes from plants that are constantly taking CO2 out of the air, to using some sort of fossil fuel, which will put back into the air CO2 that was buried (and therefore not in the air) millenia ago?
Heard about this. Carbon trading is the invisible hand behind this.
So we spent $800,000 to teach them how to wash their wee wee now we think they are stinking up the place with open fires? WTH?
I thought we taught em how to read? Cant we just send em a flier on how to build a stove?

Global Warming on Free Republic
The hypocrisy of the liberal position. They complain about how humans are destroying the planet, promote abortion, and then go on about how concerned they are about these poor children dying *premature deaths* and trying to keep more people alive.
What these rocket scientists don't stop to realize, is that it isn't just cooking over an open fire that does it. When the same method is used for indoor heating, they're still breathing in the smoke and suffering the consequences.
Until the standard of living is improved through changing the corrupt governments which keep those people in poverty, nothing is going to change no matter how many stoves you hand out.
And they're probably all going to end up on the black market anyway.
Kind of warms my heart and makes me remember when Castro gave all of those rice cookers (free of charge!!) to his Indentured Commie Servants...
No FUEL to run them, of course, and no actual RICE to cook in them, of course...
Those LibTards! Their hearts are ALWAYS in the right place when they’re spending our cash, no? *SNORT*
Hillary now wants them each to cook a turkey. “Global global global.”
And any time you give cash to the kind of asshats they have down at the UN, you're asking for trouble. Dangerous enough giving them goods. It's like giving a bum five dollars for lunch cause he says he's hungry. He ain't buying lunch with it.
