GULF ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE, FL - If you're going to the Gulf Islands National Seashore this weekend... You might want to leave the shovel and sand pale at home.
The fed says B-P workers can't dig more than 6 inches in the sand to look for oil.... and as Channel 3's Dan Thomas found out... You can't dig at all.
Dan Thomas/dthomas@weartv.com: "We had come out here to the National Park to show you just what exactly is in the sand, lower than 6 inches. We wanted to use the shovel and give you a look but apparently, that's illegal."
B-P has machines ready to go that can dig down to 18 inches... A quick look at the manual operation and you can clearly see there's oil well below the 6 inch limit.
But that's about all we can show you because in the midst of doing this story, this happened.

Apparently, the beach belongs to the Government, and not to the people. Wait a sec, what was that again about “We the People....”?
Oh, isn’t that lovely. Because it happened on BHO’s watch we will be spared the twenty years of tear-jerking and breast-beating in all the usual sources a la the Exxon Valdez.
It’s over, the well is plugged, the bacteria ate the oil. Kenneth Feinberg will write some checks. No pictures! Nothing to see here. Go away.
We the People....
That was before Obama.
Doesn't anybody proofread this crap that passes for news anymore?
Talk about selective government efficiency! Can you just imagine if this were on GWB’s watch?
This is just momentary indignation on the local media’s part. You won’t be seeing this nationwide. Oh no.
Exactly.
Most editors have been replaced by spell-check.
Yep. That jumped right out at me, too. Sad to say that it happens all too frequently in published articles these days. It's just one more sign of the dwindling spiral of the culture.
But, that's what we're all fighting against, isn't it?
It's your fault...you didn't send the teachers unions enough money. Teachers can't teach unless there's more money 'for the children.'
By the time November rolls around, you will only know that it was all BP’s fault, that the damage was minimal and that Obama performed heroically.
Ice storms, floods, hurricanes... There were no natural disasters during the reign of Barack Hussein Obama (Peace Be Upon Him).

“He said that it’s illegal to film in a National Park unless I could prove I’m with the media.”
So millions of Americans with video cameras visiting national parks are now criminals?
Sounds like it. Maybe its just the ones one the Gulf Coast, dont know though.
I’ve been digging holes on that same beach at Fort Pickens) and Johnson Beach for more than 20 years and nobody ever tried to stop me from doing it. Haven’t tried it this year - but if I could do it before I can still do it now?
All you could do is try, and maybe have camera along with you too.
I am sooooo glad you posted this. I have a friend who had to get permission last weekend FROM BP to plant sea oats on Johnson Beach. Excuse me????!!!! A foreign corporation is telling Americans they cannot dig on an American beach? Did y’all read that? Foreign corporation - American beach. Americans are being told they cannot build sandcastles on the beach. Watch the video report from WEAR. Americans are being told how far into the sand we can dig?
