GOP nightmare: O'Donnell topples Castle in Delaware primary

The path to a Republican Senate takeover narrowed to the point of vanishing Tuesday night, as marketing consultant Christine O’Donnell upset Rep. Mike Castle in Delaware’s Senate primary and likely dashed the GOP’s hopes of capturing the seat in the process.

Though six other states and the District of Columbia voted in primary elections Tuesday night, the outcome in Delaware had by far the most profound implications for the fall campaign. While Castle was comfortably on track to capture Vice President Joe Biden’s former Senate seat, O’Donnell will enter the general election at a wide disadvantage to the presumptive Democratic nominee, New Castle County Executive Chris Coons.

Other leading Republicans openly lamented O’Donnell’s win. Karl Rove, appearing on Fox News, immediately declared: “We were looking at eight to nine seats in the Senate. We’re now looking at seven to eight. This is not a race we’re going to be able to win.”

A month ago everyone was saying O'Donnell couldn't win the primary. So why are so many now claiming she can't win the general election?

It's hogwash. She can win if she keeps her momentum and Tea Party support. I'm not saying she will or that it will be easy. She will need to tear into Coons hard and show people the stark choice between freedom and slavery. Which is really what this comes down to. But if she can do that, she has a chance at winning. Even in Delaware.

If Rove thinks Christine will lose the general election for the DE Senate seat, I think her chances are good. After all, it was Rove’s faulty thinking about immigration in 2006 that led to the GOP’s downfall. So if Rove advises one thing, the opposite thing is more likely to win.

Hey, Karl. If it's seven to eight this election, we'll clear out the rest of you guys in 2012 and succeeding years. Buh bye.

Say Hello to your new Senate Majority Leader, Dick Durbin.

Say goodbye to a false GOP majority, weak-kneed RINO establishment, backstabbing, Arlen Spectacle, Sotomoyor & Kagen supporting, gun-grabbing, Cap and Tax, Pontius Pilate politician.

Republicans may call it a nightmare, I call it a sweet dream!

That bastard Castle voted for impeachment hearing on George W. Bush. Enough said.

What an ass. Just another reason we need to take a step beyond throwing the RINOs overboard, and get these entrenched party machine hacks out of the party as well.

Rove did nothing for our party except give us George W. Bush, whose lame-ass Presidency set the stage for the RATS to step in and win with Barack The Destroyer.

Maybe he can get a cushy job as a “commentator” (along with Newt Gingrich - another has-been whose 15 minutes of fame is long past) on Fox News or something, where he can pretend he’s still important.

Screw them all. The people are fighting back, and if we have to ditch BOTH parties to get the job done, we will.

Gonzo, the difference between 47 and 49 is not nil...it’s huge. It means you get 50 with Lieberman on some issues. It means you are one special election from 50 during the next two years. It means you only have to pick up 1 more vote in 2012.

To suggest the difference between 47 and 49 is nil is both foolish and inaccurate. We need EVERY vote to stop Obamism. 49 is better than 47. Even if some of the 49 only voted with us 65% of the time, that’s better than putting these liberal Dems in that will vote with us 0% of the time.

But yippeee, we won the primary with an ultra conservative who can’t win the general and only keeps more liberals in the Senate. Yippeee / sarcasm

The difference between RINOs that are scared of being primaried and RINOs that feel free to side with Obama on judicial filibusters is monumental. Putting terror into the hearts of the RINOs was a fair trade for a seat that wouldn't matter and a candidate that only voted with the conservatives 47% of the time.

Well said!

I agree about Perino..she showed her colors tonight. How dare she imply that someone who is not “establishment” can’t win..then she tried to back away from that...it was her Bush that made so many conservatives angry about the spending and Rove, who I find interesting, was one of the members of the Bush team who led the assault. From now on I’ll take anything Dana says with a huge grain of rock salt.

....The whole national upheaval is anti big government, anti-not listening politicians and still more grassroots heartland Americana feelings..... the people movement are not going to swallow a pill and revert to Mitt Romney type just because a few nominees could lose in Nov!

That 1/3 can be substantial.

The 2/3rd liberal part of Castle could also helped undermine a conservative agenda when it really matters -- after 2012.

There is absolutely no reason conservative Republicans can't be the majority in the Senate after the 2012 election.

Is Castle a Democrat or a Republican? Well the results of tonight's primary tells you all you need to know. Castle is a Democrat and anybody that voted for him is a gun-grabbing, cap-and-spending socialist.

Because of Christine McDonnell's win, we actually have a chance to elect a REPUBLICAN to the senate in Delaware this year instead of a tired, worn-out liberal.

Any Freeper that supported this character is not worthy of calling themselves a Freeper.

Say Hello to your new Senate Majority Leader, Dick Durbin.

How about saying hello to a real choice instead of picking among two liberals? Why does that (R) behind Castle's name make you so comfortable when he may as well be a friggin' democrat? To know Castle is to look at his voting record - I say good riddance.

Dumping on O'Donnell and her supporters for the possible loss of the Senate is asinine.

Really, sometimes you’d rather see a Dem elected than a damn RINO? Please, explain that logic to me.

I’m stuck here in California and would go crazy to have a liberal RINO over Boxer or Feinstein. I hate Arnold as governor, absolutely hate him because he’s a RINO...but he’s better than having a complete turd liberal Democrat.

I’m sorry, but NEVER is it better to have a liberal Democrat than a damn RINO WHEN the damn RINO is the best you will ever get. And the best we will ever get in Delaware is a damn RINO. Instead, we just decided that having someone vote against 100% of the time was better than someone voting with us 65% of the time.

Absolutely foolish.

When RINOs win, the GOP stays establishment - and NOTHING gets changed! Some of the weenies that the GOP loves need to lose in order to give a spine to the GOP.

I don’t give money so someone with an (R) can spout liberal policies. If we cannot get a reasonably conservative person in, then there is no point in winning.

Idiot! You must be one of those GOP power hungry people - no ethics, no conservative policies, just a thirst for power. Well, let me tell you and all the other GOP hangers on, get out and get out now... Things have changed! No longer will we put up with RINO attitudes!

No more porkfests!

No more compromises with the Democrats just to get along (to hell with what is right or what is good for the country).

If you insist on winning just to get into power, you WILL be voted out! Either get some ethics, honesty, and do what is right for this Country or go away!

Yes, that pertains to you stupid voters also...
