PARIS The French Senate has voted overwhelmingly for a bill banning the burqa-style Islamic veil everywhere from post offices to streets, in a final step toward a making it law.
The Senate voted 246 to 1 Tuesday in favor of the bill, which has already passed in the lower chamber, the National Assembly.
Any dissenters have 10 days to challenge the measure in the Constitutional Council watchdog, but that is considered unlikely.

Never happen here.....
All the burning automobiles will be visible from space. Maybe it’ll be an Astronomy Picture of the Day!
That’s going to contribute to global warming.
So they’ll have to stay in their own little no-go enclaves. They’re not going to stop wearing them unless they want to be gangraped and mutilated (google ‘tournante’ and ‘sourire’).
I’ve got mixed feelings about this,I do believe women should be allowed to wear whatever is comfortable and it is their choice first and foremost not the choice of some elected officials.
It is a nice gesture but it doesn’t deal with the alienation both young men and you women from a North African, middle Eastern or whatever background feel with mainstream society in France.
At least it solves the driver license problem.
The “Youths” aren’t going to respond well to this.
Then they can go home right?
I don’t have mixed feelings about this at all. Govt has no business telling people what to wear. This law will have terrible unintended consequences for the women who wear the vail in public, that France is not prepared to deal with. I don’t think that women should be force to wear clothing, let alone a vail, but I do not want govt sticking its fingers where it does not belong. This being about security is rubbish. Is France going to arrest party-goers wearing masks during carnival time?
If France is concerned about the burqa then France should deport these people back to North Africa, but they won’t, it is just a stunt.
If France is not your country, you have no say in the matter. American women visiting Saudi Arabia can't wear what they want. Complain to the Saudi government (of course they're not elected).
My bank has a sign asking me to remove my sunglasses and hat when I enter. I don’t have a problem with it, I know the reason.
The Muslims do have a problem with Burka’s and for the same reason. They cannot hide behind a mask, or disguise.
In these thing you cannot tell who the person is there is no means of identification, and the Muzzies take advantage of that.
I never.. EVER thought I’d say this, but... I wish we had France’s courage!
Oui mon ami.
No mixed feelings here. Perhaps a bit of background is in order to help you resolve your feelings.
This bill is a direct response to ‘the youths’ harassing, sometimes raping, any woman not wearing the veil making it difficult for non-muslim women to attend school or even to be out in public. While it may seem extreme, the cause of that extremism is the attempt by muslim ‘youths’ to impose their version of society upon the rest of France.
Oh, one last comment. You really shouldn’t make excuses and try to blame muslim lawlessness in France upon ‘mainstream society’ for alienating the poor young muslims. Put the blame where it belongs. The only reason those poor pitiful muslim youths feel alienated in France is because they don’t feel comfortable in a non-Sharia nation. The only way you can deal with their ‘alienation’ is to give into their demands for a Sharia governed nation throughout France. And, no, they won’t be satisfied with imposing Sharia on their own limited communities but will insist upon all of France being under Sharia.
this should certainly take their attention off of some kook out in South Succotash somewhere who wants to burn a Koran
I predict it’s unenforceable
Absolutely correct: this is a poor response to an immigration crisis and the crime it creates. The answer is to deal with the vast, unassimilated population seething inside of France, but instead they make an absurd gesture about clothing. No American would ever stand for it, and no Conservative should support the State telling anyone what they can and can't wear. As long as they show their faces where they need to (ID photos, security checks, banks), I don't care what people wear.
