By the year 2020 Europe will be up to 75 % dependent on Russia for oil and gas. Imagine what a warm glow this prospect induces in the Kremlin.
Russia’s bigshots can hardly believe their luck when they read that Old Europe does not dare to build more nuclear plants because it is scared of its electorates.
This all sounds too good not to be well considered. John le Carré should write a thriller about the young KGB lieutenant who in 1985 predicted that Mikhail Gorbachev’s policy of glasnost would lead to “the worst accident of the century”, the collapse of Soviet power in Europe. Did Moscow’s dirty tricks department then find a devilishly clever way of scaring the hell out of West Europeans, and bully us out of building new nuclear plants? Was Chernobyl really just the usual Soviet sloppiness? One thing is certain. Twenty years on, the no-longer-so-young KGB spook Vladimir Putin is in charge, and Mother Russia has her iron thumb on Europe’s power supplies. Nations on the western side of the River Elbe have always been servile to Russia, and cowed on the eastern side. Now three Baltic countries and Poland are building new nuclear plants to replace Lithuania’s Soviet-type Ignalina plant, which contains the two largest operating reactors in the world.
This project is a fitting response to the insult of the German-Russian gas pipeline, and a renewed assertion of freedom and independence. There are some paradoxes about nuclear energy and Europe. For example, in order to become a member of the EU, Bulgaria must shut down its Kozloduy nuclear power plant. But any Bulgarian government wishing to survive will have to re-open it as soon as the country is safely in the EU. Sweden will keep her dozen plants working for at least another 40 years. Finland is already building a fifth plant and intends to start work on a sixth. Regardless of global warming, Nordic winters remain as cold as ever.
Germany was for years the political hostage of the Greens, and the German Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel is still psychologically a hostage to environmental extremists. He took great umbrage at the cautious reference in the Commission’s energy paper to including nuclear in the European energy mix. Once upon a time, the joke went that going to the Russian hell was the best option because the heating would not work. This is no longer a safe bet. Russia herself has no complexes about nuclear energy. Indeed, much of her oil wealth is wisely being invested in the latest nuclear technology. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other new European leaders face a choice between a new dependency on Russia, chilly nights, or shedding some of the Green superstitions about nuclear energy.

if you look at the oil price graph from the 1980s you can see that price of oil went down drastically in the first quarter of 1986 ; Chernobyl act of sabotage happened on April 26, 1986. There are security groups out there who test the ATFP security measures of various facilities to prove where security weaknesses exist.
When security inspections take place of high security areas, the inspection results tend to be political with the brass, so about 10 years ago, some security inspectors would assemble teams similar to Special Ops teams, fully equip them as though a credible threat, then let them probe the facility to be inspected and commence the mechanics of an actual assault, but not always fully public.
They’d plant evidence of their intrusion, so that those in the know couldn’t deny it, and photograph or document their operation in progress, to corner those with authority to actually take corrective action in their security measures.
This almost reads that literal in the report. Even if it isn’t, if any of it is true, that would be the best public disclosure route to advance.

GOLDEN, Colorado — A just-released Pentagon report spotlights a growing U.S. military concern that China is developing a multi- dimensional program to limit or prevent the use of space-based assets by its potential adversaries during times of crisis or conflict.
Furthermore, last year’s successful test by China of a direct-ascent, anti-satellite (ASAT) weapon to destroy its own defunct weather satellite, the report adds, underscores that country’s expansion from the land, air, and sea dimensions of the traditional battlefield into the space and cyber-space domains.
Although China’s commercial space program has utility for non- military research, that capability demonstrates space launch and control know-how that have direct military application. Even the Chang’e 1 — the Chinese lunar probe now circling the Moon — is flagged in the report as showcasing China’s ability “to conduct complicated space maneuvers — a capability which has broad implications for military counterspace operations.”

WASHINGTON, March 26 (UPI) — The continuing tensions over Russia’s refusal to sell its state-of-the-art land warfare advanced weapons systems to China hasn’t interrupted the rhythm of major joint military exercises between the two major land powers on the Eurasian landmass. The latest in the regular, biennial series of exercises between the two nations has been confirmed for this summer.
The next in the now well-established series of exercises called Peace Mission 2009 will be carried out in northeastern China, the Russian Defense Ministry announced March 18, according to a report carried by the RIA Novosti news agency.
The first bilateral Peace Mission maneuvers — described at the time as counter-terrorism exercises — were held in Russia and the eastern Chinese province of Shandong in August 2005. As we reported at that time, they were a lot bigger than mere counter-terrorism exercises. Warships, squadrons of combat aircraft and more than 10,000 troops were involved carrying out landings against hypothetically hostile shores. The maneuvers also involved large-scale paratroops drops. The scale and nature of those exercises suggested a trial run for a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan with Russian support. ...”

Russia, China flex muscles in joint war games

CHEBARKUL, Russia (Reuters) - Russia and China staged their biggest joint exercises on Friday but denied this show of military prowess could lead to the formation of a counterweight to NATO.
“Today’s exercises are another step towards strengthening the relations between our countries, a step towards strengthening international peace and security, and first and foremost, the security of our peoples,” Putin said.
Fighter jets swooped overhead, commandos jumped from helicopters on to rooftops and the boom of artillery shells shook the firing range in Russia’s Ural mountains as two of the largest armies in the world were put through their paces.
The exercises take place against a backdrop of mounting rivalry between the West, and Russia and China for influence over Central Asia, a strategic region that has huge oil, gas and mineral resources.
Russia’s growing assertiveness is also causing jitters in the West. Putin announced at the firing range that Russia was resuming Soviet-era sorties by its strategic bomber aircraft near NATO airspace.

War Games: Russia, China Grow Alliance

In foreign policy it’s critical to “know thine enemy.” So American policymakers should be aware that Russia and China are inching closer to identifying a common enemy — the United States.
The two would-be superpowers held unprecedented joint military exercises Aug. 18-25. Soothingly named “Peace Mission 2005,” the drills took place on the Shandong peninsula on the Yellow Sea, and included nearly 10,000 troops. Russian long-range bombers, the army, navy, air force, marine, airborne and logistics units from both countries were also involved.
Moscow and Beijing claim the maneuvers were aimed at combating terrorism, extremism and separatism (the last a veiled reference to Taiwan), but it’s clear they were an attempt to counter-balance American military might.
Joint war games are a logical outcome of the Sino-Russian Friendship and Cooperation Treaty signed in 2001, and reflect the shared worldview and growing economic ties between the two Eastern Hemisphere giants. As the Pravda.ru Web site announced, “the reconciliation between China and Russia has been driven in part by mutual unease at U.S. power and a fear of Islamic extremism in Central Asia.” [BS! Russian nuclear bombers in Cuba?

The media has been abuzz today at the prospect of Russian nuclear bombers being stationed in Cuba if the US goes ahead with plans for missile defense bases in Eastern Europe.
The story has riled the US enough that a US general has been wheeled out to tell the world’s press that any Russian attempt to build another nuclear base in Cuba would cross US “red line”.
The story broke earlier this week, when Russian newspaper Izvestia quoted an un-named source from within the Russian military. He told the Russian daily:
“While they are deploying the missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, our strategic bombers will already be landing in Cuba.”
The quote hasn’t been independently confirmed, but the Russian Defense Ministry added fuel to the fire when they refused to comment on the story.
The prospect of Russian nuclear forces being stationed in Cuba - which is, after all, only 90 miles from the US coast - would bring back some rather unpleasant memories for the US of the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, where the Soviet Union under Nikita Kruschev launched an audacious and foolhardy bid to station nuclear missiles on the Caribbean island.

Don't worry about Florida being cut off from an I-95 incident. There is always I-75 and many other roads into the state.
What worries me from this thread so far is the supposed rushed program of Russians building 5000 bomb shelters within two years. Bomb shelters indicate advanced warning of attack, not terrorism. I.e., ICBM attack. Why do they anticipate nuclear attack by 2012?
