Daily Fix Poll: Jim DeMint, 2012 contender?
Wash. Post ^ | 9/13/10 | Aaron Blake

Posted on 09/13/2010 10:24:15 AM PDT by pissant

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) made perhaps his riskiest endorsements yet this weekend, backing Christine O'Donnell (R-De.) and Ovide Lamontagne (R-N.H.) in their respective Senate races.

It all begs the question: What's the endgame here? DeMint advisers insist he has no aspirations for leadership in the Senate or a run for national office but that seems hard to fathom given his level of involvement in races to date.

Behind the scenes, opposing camps sound pretty convinced that DeMint will at least take a hard look at running for president in 2012. With the current GOP primary electorate trending toward tea party types, it's hard to see there being a better time for DeMint to try and ramp up his own political career.

So, will DeMint run? And, if he does, can he win? As we do every day the sun comes up, we turn to you for the answers. Vote below!

Early 2012 GOP primaries are going to be crowded.

John Bolton is now thinking about it? Sheriff Joe possibly?

How thin can we stretch the conservative vote?

Thank God for Jim DeMint who is an American patriot unlike 99% of the fools in DC. Spine and guts is non-existant in DC among the loathsome career politicians.

DeMint will stay put in the Senate. He’s had some success, and there are two very target-rich Senate race election cycles coming up in 2012/2014.

Yeah we need him to be the next Majority Leader in the Senate, or/and next NRSC Chief!

That he will.

I'm looking forward to this primary season.

Me too. It will be bruising as usual, but our nation is in a very perilous place, much like it was in 1979.

As vulnerable as Obama looks, every Republican with aspirations to be president are probably giving it a hard look. Otherwise, their next opportunity may be 2020.

If DeMint runs, he goes to the front of my list. I love Sarah but she has 1-1/2 parties opposing her, sometimes irrationally so. DeMint gives me most of what Palin would without the built-in derangement factor.

-"How thin can we stretch the conservative vote?"

How do you think McQueeg got in 2008: 2008 - IA / McCain 13% 2008 - NH / McCain 37% 2008 - SC / McCain 33% 2008 - FL / McCain 36%

McCain got far more votes than all the conservatives in the race combined.

Let's review the conservatives from 2008: Fred Thompson, Duncan Hunter.

Yikes.

If I had to bet now I'd bet on Sen. John Thune. But we'll see.

"I love Sarah but she has 1-1/2 parties opposing her, sometimes irrationally so."

I like Sarah too, and I wouldn't have a problem voting for her, but as much as I despise liberals, I will admit that when they decided to go for an all out push to make her un electable, they did one helluva job.

They have other liberals, independents and even wobbly republicans bad mouthing her and 100% convinced she can't win.

I think the world of DeMint and agree he'd make a great CIC, but I wonder about how well-researched that endorsement of Lamontagne is. Doesn't Lamontagne have an anti-gun background?
