The imam behind a mosque project near Ground Zero said in an interview aired Sunday that "certain politicians" were exploiting the controversy.
Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf told ABC's "This Week" that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's assertion that that mosque was an unnecessary provocation was "disingenuous."
"The discourse has been hijacked by radicals on both sides," he said, adding that protesters in the U.S. and protests in the Muslim world "feed off each other."
When asked whether he would consider relocating the mosque, the imam said, "The decisions that I will make will be predicated on what is best for everybody."
He said if he had known such controversy would be sparked by the plans he never would have done it. He said his main concern with moving it now is sending the message to the Muslim world that Islam was under attack in America, thus fueling radicalism.
"It is an extremely important consideration," he said. The imam said that he wasn't making any such threats, but that he is "a man of peace."

Hell no, I did not support MClame, and that is what the media wanted. I voted Sarah... But to make it clear there is so much hate for her, that it worries me... I go on yahoo comments alot and the viral hate for Sarah and the things they say about her and her family make me sick... I just worry for her... Obamas is going to be backed into a corner and have millions of people that will blindly do what ever they feel or what he says... And things for any republicans will be very dangerous... Now oth if it was Sarah and Michelle they libs would have heads exploding all over the country..
“I’m a Palin supporter, read and love her book, and hope I have the chance to vote for her for President in 2012. That said ... have ANY prominent leaders on the right taken a stand FOR Quran burning?...”
But you’re taking your views of what “should” have been done and imputing those views to Palin, and then calling her ‘disingenuous’ in the process for something she never said...
And my general point on this was a larger one: prominent leaders on the right acted in hopes of convincing somebody not to do something because of the possibility that it could lead to innocent deaths; Rauf, OTOH, could be called upon to make a legitimate attempt to warn radical Islamists not to attack if the GZM is moved. He has made no such statement- instead he acts as if there is nothing that can be done to stop them from attacking.
What next if we follow Rauf’s line of reasoning? We better immediately allow Sharia law to be imposed upon on us...because if we don’t, they will attack...?
Wow. Even the Iman are discussing Palin. She really is a force. This is good. It just gives more credibility to her thoughts on the Mosque.
If he doesn’t like the politics here he’s welcome to return to his homeland: Kuwait.
Nice picture. It looks much more elegant that the current Oval Office. Did you add the beauty or is this a picture of one of the former Presidents. Either way, I believe that Sarah just may be President and I am warming up to the idea big time.
The problem with taking anything this Imam says seriously is that there is no moral imperative to tell the truth in Islam. As a matter of fact, they are encouraged by their false prophet to lie if it is felt an advantage can be gained by so doing. It’s not until Islam has gained the upper hand that the truth is revealed.
They did the same exact thing to the Christians in Lebannon who opened wide their doors to these murderers in 1970. The leftist Christians who marched in the streets with the Islamists for Muslim acceptance were among those getting their throats cut just a few years later.
This is a very dangerous game.
It was a well-meant argument on Palin's part, and appealed to me at first as well. But it was disingenuous with regard to burning Korans as well as the buildilng of the mosque at GZ: neither represented forces doing it "just because they could." They were doing it to send concise, pointed messages as powerfully as possible.
The idea of not communicating intention to defend, on American soil, freedom on American soil for fear of "the possiblity that it could lead to innocent deaths" is pure cowardice, plain and simple. It is cowardice so convincingly disguised as prudence that many conservatives don't see through the disguise. Not yet, anyway.
Hi napscoordinator!
GOOD to see you! Actually, I “borrowed” the pic from 2ndDivisionVet...lol, so I don’t know where he acquired it.
I just thought it fit this article, since that awful imam blamed her, (fine with me) just like the _resident often replies to her. She sure knows how to pull the Marxist’s chain. LOL. I’m not sure of her chances, but I know she’s a genuine, good and decent person and patriot. I pray for her.
Blessings, dear FRiend!
That's a two-way street, and there are more of us, we have most of the firearms and the vast majority of the hunting, outdoors, shooting sports, military, reserves, veterans and law enforcement communities. To quote President Bush: "Bring it on!"
They are moore afraid of her than hate her. We must remember that that faction wants the country to go Communist. Unfortunately, so does the globalist shadow government. I will stick with Sarah until the end. It is time Republicans stop abandoning gtheir princples and DO THE RIGHT THING. Please pray for the Palin’s safety.
“Excuse me, you are saying now that she “never said” something that you earlier said she did?...”
That’s not what I was saying. There all kinds of definitions of ‘disingenuous’ floating around.
What I meant- by what I thought you were getting at originally- is that she was supposedly being ‘disingenuous’ because she shared your view- of “communicating intention to defend, on American soil, freedom on American soil” First Amendment rights any time, any place...regardless of the possibility of massive loss of life- and that she was dancing around this. I don’t know how she feels about this issue other than what she said.
I don’t disagree with your sentiment, but there’s a time and place...
And sometimes, it’s just bad politics. Would you really want to see potential terrorist attacks a couple of days before the midterms...with OBL and the rest blabbering away at how they killed all these people on American soil because of Sarah Palin and the rest of the eeeevil conservatives who you want to support the Koran burning? Do you think that would help or hurt the cause?
I believe it is better to go on the offensive against Rauf to defend our freedoms than to potentially have to play defense (and curry favor to an attention-whore like Jones). But that’s just me.
Saarah’s glasses lend her solidity and believability. She is not just another pewrry face! She has brains and a poweful down to earth delievery, which has endeared her to conservatives in all parties. At this point I think she is the best choice for the Republican canidacy for President in 32012. Unlike some other people, what yu see is what you get with Governor Palin.
Go for it Sarah. We are with you.
The media destroyed Reagan, too. That didn’t stop him from winning two landslide presidential elections.
