Things have gotten out of hand when it comes to predictions of a Republican victory in the upcoming midterm elections. In recent days, talk of a GOP edge has turned into talk of a GOP blowout. Prognosticators have upgraded the coming political storm from Category 4 to Category 5. Republican control of the House has gone from possible to inevitable.
But Republicans don't believe it, or at least the insiders involved in the midterm effort don't believe it. As they see it, they're in a good position to pick up the 39 seats needed to win control of the House, but polls showing a huge GOP lead are simply wrong. "I'm assuming that Cook and Rothenberg and Rove and the others have got different indications from what we've got," says one member of the House GOP election team. "I don't want to overestimate what's out there."
"I think it's about even," says a strategist involved in the GOP effort. "That is a remarkable place to be, given where we were in the '08 election. But it's about even."
The landslide talk was based on two high-profile polls. One, from Gallup, showed Republicans with an unprecedented 10-point lead in the so-called "generic ballot" question -- whether voters will choose the Democratic or Republican candidate in their congressional election. The other poll, from the Washington Post and ABC News, showed the GOP with a 13-point lead.
There are problems with both polls. First, Gallup's surveys have been pretty uneven this election season. Indeed, Gallup has since released a new poll showing the generic ballot question dead even, which doesn't exactly inspire confidence in its finding of a 10-point GOP lead.

I’ll believe it when I see it. I have no faith in the American electorate, right now.
Are these the same insiders who took complete control of the Congress and the Executive, and managed to lose ALL of it in only 8 years?
GOP insiders would like nothing more than the defeat of every people’s candidate in the country. Then they can run out and tell us how we need to be more liberal.
Never underestimate stupidity of the public. There are a LOT of people out there who will follow Obama off a cliff. There is still 41% who thinks he’s doing a great job.
Similarly in today's NY Post, there was an article about the Yankees seemingly running away with the AL East division title and how the team itself are not thinking that way. They are thinking as if they are 10 games behind ... THAT'S what makes a championship team what it is, and the GOP should be thinking no differently.

You can fool some of the people some of the time but not all the people all the time. Americans are not as dumb as the media thinks. BO and his lap dogs in congress have been had.......their biggest concern is going to be not to let the door hit them in the a## on the way out.
Precisely.
I expect the October surprise will come from a machine Republican. My bet is on Steele.
No, the previous 10-point lead doesn't inspire confidence in the new even poll.
Pure bullzhit and wishful thinking...
There will be a tidal wave and anything with a “D” in front of the name is going to be swept out to sea....believe the spin if you want, but it’s just a scare tactic, nothing more...
We re nominated the guy the NRCC tossed overboard in 08. John boehner didn’t waste any time running up here to kiss some butt when our candidate won by a wide margin.
He’s leading by double digits today.
"You never count your money
when you're sittin' at the table
they'll be time enough for countin'
when the dealin's done."
Ping!!!
Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand the Republicans MUST NOT get complacent, but the American people understand this President hates them, hates the country and wants to punish us.
They understand he is being enabled by his Democrat cohorts, they understand he CHOOSES TO SIDE WITH HIS muslim BROTHERS ...it WILL be a bloodbath...
I bet the GOP maintains it's GOP senate edge in Maine for quite some time to come.
HOORAY! /s
I am glad to see this article. I was becoming nervous people would get complacent. Dick Morris etc talking about winning the Senate in particular worry me.
Dick is perhaps an outlier, but there is a “consensus”...
Pickup Projections
Dick Morris 60-80
Sabato 47
EP 41
Cook 40
KHR 38
Rothenberg 37-42
CQ Politics 36
We Need 39 +
It just seems too good to be true. I suppose they fear having high hopes shot down by voter fraud. That’s understandable.
If the GOP falls short this year, it is done...stick a fork in it.
We've got better vehicles to drive.
I am a Red Sox fan, trust me, being up 11 in 1978 meant crap. Ask Bucky Dent.
