In Support of Westboro Baptist

By Fran Ingram - Posted on 21 April 2010

On Sunday April 18, Westboro Baptist Church came to Gainesville. One of their stops was a liberal "Open doors, open hearts, open minds," church near us, so we took part of our Sunday Service time and went as a church to stand with them.

/snip

I have been asked most often in the last days about the 'protests' that Westboro does at funerals.

The arguemant (from very angry people with extremely ugly language) is that their attendance at funerals is offensive and a fallen soldier is NOT a sign of God's wrath.

My answer:

Westboro Baptist is not anti-military or anti-USA. Rather the opposite, actually. Do some research. They go to funerals because the Bible says that a fallen soldier is a sign of God's wrath and a reminder of the condition of this world, a fallen world, in sin. We all know that. None of us want to fight wars. We have to, and we honor the fallen for their sacrifice, but funerals are also a chance to repent and get our lives right with God before our own comes along.

The soldier who is already dead knows what's coming, whether they are in heaven or hell. I think they would be glad for the extra reminder to loved ones that they still have time to make a choice and use the rest of their time given here for God rather than wasting it, in a spiritual sense.

We have also learned that when you speak out about what God hates, you will be hated. We do not agree with all of Westboro's methods, but we admire their determination to find radical ways to preach the truth of the Bible, as we do. Most churches and Pastors in America try to stand on neutral ground. They are lost, weak and sick and need to repent.

Senior Pastor Sylvia Jones wrote on facebook:

Today was a historical day! People who did not know each other with nothing in common but the word of God marching in unity and putting the kingdom first, ahead of everything else! What can be more important than saving people from hell? We must stand on the truth, the word of God instead on finding reasons why we cannot be in unity! Yes we can! We can obey God and save people from going to hell!

You can find more pictures on our facebook page here...

At DWOC we are also very pro-America, pro-Military, AND super, radically concerned about people's salvation. That's why we go after Islam and say it is of the devil - it is anti-Christian and anti-America. In this liberal world, names and labels get thrown about and twisted at random. Don't we all get angry with the media for preaching half truths which amount to lies?
To my Christian friends, get your Bibles out and read the OT Prophets. They were hated too for speaking God's words of truth, then killed. I would rather be right with God than right with facebook friends. Where are you?

And another answer:

If we lived in a sinless, no devil world, there would be no war. We have chosen sin, there are therefore wars, and we all suffer, we all need to repent. I'm OK with your thinking I am sick, but think about the fact that the Bible is what I am talking about, not my own ideas. Don't you think that a fallen soldier reflects some of what is wrong with the world? Not the soldier but the war itself?

What is the point of not making people angry and uncomfortable in this life if that means they go on, clueless, rebellious, straight to hell. I would have to answer to God for that. I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ and to stand with other Christians that preach it truthfully. Did the prophets and leaders in the Bible, even Jesus, did they always peach a nice sweet message? Did they always respect the sensibilities and traditions of the people? Think about it. Read your Bibles, people!

I have a Grandfather that died in WWII.  I am proud of his contribution to that war. But he and my family are Christian and eternal salvation is the most important thing on our hearts. We do not think Westboro are hateful. They point out what God hates, desperate, like the Prophets of old that no one go to hell.

Jesus said, in Matthew 7:13,14

"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

That narrow gate is a knowledge of the truth, a fear of God, Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the cross for your sins, repentance from our sins and wickedness, as we are warned throughout the Bible. This is the hope for you, the hope for your family, the hope for our Nation, for the world.

And yes, if my husband died I would be glad if Westboro would come and hold their signs and sing at his funeral. Many people would be shocked, but they might be shocked into a fear of God and a decision for Christ. How will they know if someone does not tell them?

Sorry. Still doesn't work, P.

The Old Testament is also filled with references to killing women, children and animals, and taking the goods in areas that were occupied by idolators. Do you support that as well?

You probably know I'm a Protestant, but the history of the Church on both sides of the denominational divide isn't necessarily a good gauge for how we should behave today. Christians have done many un-Christlike things in His Name because Christians are sinners saved by grace, and flawed people.

Burning books, burning people in effigy, burning crosses in people's yards........none of these actions is, IMHO, the right thing to do, Christian 'history' or not.....

The problem is that the muslims are slowly attempting to bring their “beliefs ‘ to America and demand that we follow their “laws” . The muslims have declared war against America and our way of life. Some people are just to blind to see it.

We have to, and we honor the fallen for their sacrifice,

Right. Honoring them by telling their family that they're burning in hell right now, without even knowing anything about the person.

I'm using the same argument others have been using on this topic, xzins.

It is their Constitutional "right" to build the mosque. They have the freedom to practice their religion (that is how it is defined) in this country.

And yet it is very, very wrong to build that mosque at Ground Zero, in your opinion and in mine (not Ron Paul's however, who agrees with Obama's "principles").

What I am saying is that, the arguments for this action are the same arguments for the building of a mosque at the WTC.

And I think both are wrong things to do............as a Christian, and as an American.

You're still wrong. I am allied only with responsible, Scripture based Christianity.

I believe, as Paul stated, that though I have the freedom to do all things, all things are not wise.

This is not wise, and I am in no one's 'chorus' just as those Americans who opposed fascism in WWII were not in Stalin's "chorus." (America's political alignment is not the same issue. It was based on politics, not principle).

As long as you make the comparison that those who disagree with you are singing the same song as our political enemies, who oppose everything we hold dear and have entirely filthy motivations for everything they do, you will lose your argument.

Stick to the principles, and avoid condemning the people who disagree with you, and you will have more success in your debate.

I watched millions of Muslims take to the streets, burn the American Flag...burn Bush in effigy, video decapitation for us....They stone women, cut off limbs... The teachings in that book is their justification...Religion??? BS...It's a political movement....

You have just defined an "Islamist" which is, indeed, a political movement disguised as a religion.

An Islamist is a radical Muslim that wants to impose his extreme religious views on the rest of the society and the national Government itself, even if he has to resort to the death penalty to do it.

Islamism: ( is-ˈlä-ˌmi-zəm ) a movement advocating the reordering of government and society in accordance with laws prescribed by Islam .... Webster's Dictionary

Iran and Saudi Arabia today are "Islamist" countries.

Iran under the Shah of Iran was Muslim but was definitely NOT Islamist.

Christian analogies include the Spanish Inquisition, the Puritan Witch Trials and the burnings at the stake in Calvinist Geneva. There are many examples of God endorsing extreme violence in the Old Testament and the contents of the Old Testament were their justifications.

The large majority of Muslims and Christians no longer belong to that religious nutjob fringe. How many Christians or Jews today pay any attention whatsoever to 2 Kings 10:18-27 where the Old Testament advocates the murder of all worshipers of another religion?

However, they still consider themselves either Christian or Muslim.

The Islamists are still back in the day of the 2 Kings 10:18-27 mentality of the 16th Century burnings at the stake practiced by both Catholics and Protestants. Most Muslims have evolved beyond that point but it is always the religious nutjobs that end up on The Evening News on Channel 5.

The secular Turkish Republic has been fighting against Islamists since the 1920's when most of Western Civilization never heard of the term. Yet, Turks still consider themselves "Muslim" just like the Catholic that goes to Church once every 4 years still considers himself "Catholic".

Imagine an English church in the 1970's that decides to respond to Irish Republican Army terrosism by burning Catholic rosaries, burning pictures of the Virgin Mary and hanging effigies of the Pope. The IRA would be laughing their heads of as insulted Catholics, around the world, turned against England.

When you act like a religious nutjob yourself, all you are doing is mud wrestling with the pig and needlessly insulting our anti-Islamist Muslim allies that are fighting, side by side, with our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan against the Islamists that you descibed in your post.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again. POLITICALLY we have the right to burn whatever we want (although I think freedom of speech should include ONLY talking, no actions [unless sign language], no burning), but as Christians, I did not see Jesus getting angry about anything but the transformation of the Temple into a den of thieves. So, would Jesus be mad at the transformation of the church into negative activists? As far as I know, when Paul went on his missionary trips he did not tear down the pagan’s idols, he only talked about the Messhiah.

Needs repeating over and over and over again. When I was looking up information on sharia law I unfortunately stumbled on some pictures posted by the Anglican Diocese of Jos of what these animals are doing to Christians in Nigeria. The pictures were of women and children who had been butchered and slaughtered like animals. It was horrible.

Fred Phelps is NUTS, there is no question, however, hurling words is not the same thing as hacking people up like meat. Wake the hell up people and figure out that we in a global war here. These animals get off on torture by the way. They don't just kill people. And if they aren't busy hacking people to death they are busy raping women and babies. Their "holy book" gives those sick perverts the right to sodomize infant girls.

“There is nothing in Acts 19 or any other passage of Scripture that supports burning any book you don’t like.”

strawman....they arent burning “any book they dont like”....they are burning the koran to smoke out the religion of “peace”...and I would add....a wole crop of Dhimmi hand wringers who would submit to the rule of islam when the sword is put to their neck...

Looks like it’s working...

The day it is illegal to burn a Koran in the United States of America, is the day that Islam is supreme and sharia law is enforced by the Govt.

I will not submit.

You are describing an "Islamist".

See Post 188.

An "Islamist" is to "Muslim" as "Salem Witch Trials" is to "Protestant" and "Spanish Inquisition" is to "Catholic".

I will admit that the two terms are easily confused as the Islamist nutjob always end up on the Chanel 5 Evening news and our Muslim Iraqi allies fighting side by side with U.S. troops against the Islamist nutjobs are never mentioned by the liberal news media.

Can someone supply the passage in the bible where it says that a fallen soldier is a sign of God's wrath? Does it exist?

The people who are supporting this also support burning any book you don't like, and base it on the Constitutional protection provided.

As for submission to Islamofascism and sharia law, that is such a bad strawman argument that it is going up in proverbial flames.

Opposing book burning on principle has absolutely no connection to submitting to sharia law. Not one blasted thing.

The scripture you quoted does not support this protest. The people of Acts burned their own books that they had used in curious arts BEFORE they came to the truth. It was a testimony that they had changed.

We have had these kind of burnings before in youth ministry. A teenager will bring the things that he believes are no longer pleasing to Christ. I have seen teenagers burn drugs, CD’s, books. These things belonged to them and they associated them with their old life before Christ and they wanted to be rid of them.

This is NOT the intent of this church that is going to burn the Koran.

Conservatives are being taken for a ride. This guy is BAD news. Everyone is getting behind him now. Next week he is holding up a GOD HATES FAGS sign and we look stupid.

And this is the nice church that so many FReepers are defending. A big black eye for FReeperdom....

Amazing, how just a simple question -- "are these folks acting like Christians?" -- would have smoked out Jones and his band of whackadoodles.

And likewise amazing, how few of the loud FReepers on those "burn a Koran" threads are unwilling even to consider it.
