The 'Great Wall of America' and the threat from within

Between cynicism and hypocrisy lies the 2,000-mile U.S.- Mexico border. America is raising a wall in the desert to separate Mexican drug exporters from American drug consumers, to separate Latin American peasants who will work for low wages from the Americans who would hire them.

"In some places the wall is made of tennis-court-style cyclone fencing or dark mesh of the sort used for barbeque grills in public parks. In other places the wall is a palisade of 20-foot-tall bars that make a cage of both sides. The most emphatic segments are constructed of graffiti-ready slabs of steel."

And in MOST places, away from the cities, it is a falling down barbed wire fence that doesn't even slow down the hordes of smugglers and invaders, because they already cut the wires.

Our country, as we know it, is truly threatened from within and without. God help us. There was a show a while back on PBS about the Berlin wall. It was built to keep people in not out but the way it was constructed it did its job very well.

“On the Mexican side, if you stand with your back to the wall, you will see the poorest neighborhoods, built right up to the line.’

Why do you think this is Mr. Rodriguez? It's because Mexico is corrupt, and Mexico needs to fix Mexico. The longer the US is a safety valve for the feckless corrupt Mexican government, the longer they can avoid fixing their nation definitively. It is not America's fault that Mexico is a third world nation that won't take care of its own citizens. If, Mr. Rodriguez, you are a Mexican American and are truly worried about the people you are writing about, why don't you go to Mexico and help them to grow? Why don't you help them to prosper? Why don't you run for political office there? Why don't you put your neck on the line as Mayor of some border town that is being controlled by drug lords?

I can't stand self-righteous hypocritical leftists.

“... to separate Latin American peasants who will work for low wages from the Americans who would hire them.”

Correct that~

“... to separate Latin American peasants who will work for pennies on the dollar, no regulations, workman’s comp or taxes from the Americans who would hire them.”

Richard Rodriguez is the author of many books, including "Brown: The Last Discovery of America." He works for New America Media in San Francisco.

I could have guessed all that

Funny, I have a screwed up opinion of the US too. If we were thinking straight, we would have stopped this illegal immigration nonsense long ago—along with a host of other things. We are so screwed up as a nation, that for most of us, good is bad and up is down. Most of all, we would not have elected a community organizer as POTUS.

The rationalizations and nonsense those from failed civilizations will engage in to denigrate the USA rather than looking at the failed societies they fled seem to have no end. This is definitely one of the more pointless and nonsensical offerings to be put out recently.

There was a story in the San Francisco Chronicle a month or so ago about a construction worker who was buried under 11 feet of dirt while excavating a trench for a building. I am certain that this was an illegal alien hired under the table since he was ignorant of workplace safety and asserting his rights to workplace safety. I am also certain that the employer who hired him ignored the rules of a safe working environment just as readily as he ignored the rules for hiring people legally.

(We have redefined the American dream as the ability of a succeeding generation to earn more than its preceding generation.)

Let Mr. Rodriguez lead the way and turnover all income that exceeds his parents' income to the myriad "victims" of America.

While American soldiers die in Afghanistan, the Chinese venture to Kabul to negotiate mineral rights.

China's PLA had agreements with the Taleban prior to 9/11/2001 to provide military aid and technology if they would not stir up trouble in Muslim areas of China.

The land of the free that the wall was built to protect — the literal "homeland," soil so infused with sacred legend it was deemed by the makers of the Constitution more important than blood in determining citizenship — is threatened from within. And the wall that is supposed to proscribe the beginning of America becomes the place where America ends.

Paraphrasing Justice Robert H. Jackson: The Constitution is not a suicide pact.

Not a word (that I saw) about assimilation and obligations of the immigrant to respect the host country's language, heritage and culture.

Mr. Rodriguez is a flack for his family's country of origin. That's his right -- but why not monitor rights in his family's home country? Where ever it is it has more problems than the U.S.of A.

Mexico’s problem is much more than that: they’ve been painting the U.S.A. as the cause of their troubles so as to deflect their own peoples angst somewhere else.

Reconquista is a good example. In the entry of Mexico’s National Museum is a mural or a map representing “Greater Mexico”. It includes Texas, Okalahoma, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, and Oregon. School children are sat before that map and admonished that the United State stole that land from Mexico. The truth is very different.

There exist ‘hate museums’ in Mexico. These very biased institutions sole purpose is to propagandize against the U.S.A., and no doubt financed by Cuba and Central American Marxists.

Mexico is trying to concentrate its peoples attention on an outside bogeyman rather than address the true causes of poverty and corruption inside their nation.

This will blow up in their faces. It has not escaped the attention of U.S. citizens that on 9-11 there were people in the streets of Mexico City celebrating that attack in New York City.

Mexico is trying to concentrate its peoples attention on an outside bogeyman rather than address the true causes of poverty and corruption inside their nation.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

A large percentage of the Mexican men between the ages of 16 and 50 are now living in the U.S. Whole villages are devoid of men and are populated by women and children. Certainly the ruling Mexican elite likes it that way.

What is so rarely addressed is how illegal immigration to the U.S. **hurts** Mexicans!

1) The women and children are defenseless prey. Women and their children are often permanently abandoned when their husbands take new wives and start families in the U.S.

2) The men who normally lobby politically or take action against the criminal elements in the villages and neighborhoods are another nation away.

3) The most creative and wealth producing members of society are not producing this wealth for the benefit of their communities to enjoy. This encourages poverty and ignorance in Mexican communities and makes them easier to control by criminals.

( And...These are only a few of the consequences for Mexicans living in Mexico of illegal immigration.)
