The world's most high-profile climate change sceptic is to declare that global warming is "undoubtedly one of the chief concerns facing the world today" and "a challenge humanity must confront", in an apparent U-turn that will give a huge boost to the embattled environmental lobby.
Bjørn Lomborg, the self-styled "sceptical environmentalist" once compared to Adolf Hitler by the UN's climate chief, is famous for attacking climate scientists, campaigners, the media and others for exaggerating the rate of global warming and its effects on humans, and the costly waste of policies to stop the problem.
But in a new book to be published next month, Lomborg will call for tens of billions of dollars a year to be invested in tackling climate change. "Investing $100bn annually would mean that we could essentially resolve the climate change problem by the end of this century," the book concludes.
Examining eight methods to reduce or stop global warming, Lomborg and his fellow economists recommend pouring money into researching and developing clean energy sources such as wind, wave, solar and nuclear power, and more work on climate engineering ideas such as "cloud whitening" to reflect the sun's heat back into the outer atmosphere.
In a Guardian interview, he said he would finance investment through a tax on carbon emissions that would also raise $50bn to mitigate the effect of climate change, for example by building better sea defences, and $100bn for global healthcare.
His declaration about the importance of action on climate change comes at a crucial point in the debate, with international efforts to agree a global deal on emissions stalled amid a resurgence in scepticism caused by rows over the reliability of the scientific evidence for global warming.

If “climate change” were an issue we would not be ripping down hydo-electric dams.
That pisses me off more than building greenie pinwheels.
“Cloud whitening”? Why not just make it night time 24 hours a day?
So where’s the sea level rate of rise increase?
Not to be found...
The seas having rising at essentially the same rate for more than 100 years...
In fact they’ve been rising pretty steadily since the last ice age some 13,000 years ago... The “warming” trend started back then... Not in the last 50 years as claimed...
Obama’s great lakes czar Cameron Davis is head of the alliance for the great lakes. They take great pride in all the dams they remove even though they have to lie to do it.
In one case they brag about removing a dam on a small tributary of the Muskegon river and even claim to have restored the trout to the river. The only problem is that the trout were there all along because I used to stop after work and catch them both above and below the dam.
Nor would we not be building nuclear power plants, or bellyaching about where to store the waste fuel rods. Nor would environmental elitists be flying around on private jets and generating enormous power bills to light up and heat or cool there mega mansions. And, waterfront property would be plunging in price, because it will soon be underwater property.
$100 billion annually and they will solve climate change by the end of the century.
Give me $1 billion and I will have it solved by next week.
This gay vegetarian studied politics, not science:
Europe is going to get it’s head sawed off by the Muzzies. Climate change will be irrelevant.
Naked photos found!
They are trying to destroy our country.
And regarding nukes, if global warming really is the catastrophe they claim it is, we can really blame Jane Fonda for destroying the world.
She did get help from Bruce Springsteen and Jackson Browne, though.
Quit posting everything to frontpage!!
The first sentence is completely incorrect. He was never a climate change skeptic..in fact, in his books, he said he believed in Global Warming...he said it was a waste of funds in the way they were fighting it. So the Guardian is trying to spin this that a global warming skeptic is changing his tune, which is not correct. Never trust anything that is published in the Guardian.
"Cloud Whitening"? Is that what they're calling it now?
Bjorn needs to put his money where his mouth is.
Don't worry, I never do. I was just wondering what the real story was here.
Provides an excellent living for a great many hack scientists who insist on sucking at the public teat.
Unless he has concentrated and spent time on a serious rebuttal of his own prior convictions, point by point, there is a clear likelihood that he's been bought and paid for.
I sense Climategtate II rapidly approaching.
Maybe they should just hold bake sales for the money and keep their grubby little meathooks offa my carbon footprint.
