Winston Churchill out, Martin Luther King in as President Obama revamps the Oval Office

When President Barack Obama addresses the nation on Iraq tonight, his Oval Office setting will be sporting a brand new look.

While the president and his family were away on vacation in Martha's Vineyard, workers installed new wallpaper, a new rug, new chairs, lamps and a coffee table.

The famous bust of Winston Churchill has been removed and replaced with one of civil rights hero Martin Luther King.

Officials allowed photographers their first look hours before Mr Obama was due to make a speech today.

The rug - a honey-coloured carpet with the the presidential seal - has a border that includes two noted speech excerpts.

One reads 'Government of the people, by the people and for the people,' from Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, some of the most famous words ever spoken by a president.

The other is 'The welfare of each of us is dependent fundamentally on the welfare of all of us'. It is from a speech that Theodore Roosevelt gave at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, New York, on September 7, 1903.

MLK the new hero of both the left and right. Our nation has been completely transformed in less than 45 years.

America - RIP

What are the pictures on the walls?

The one on the right looks like a minaret.

can't tell what the one on the left is, although it could be a post 9-11 WTC painting. (For some reason I doubt it)

The Daily Mail is a little late with the news.

The bust of Churchill was removed - and sent back to the UK - on January 20th. 2009.

The coffee table looks more like a coffin.

Wonder if The Constitution is in there?

Another slap in the face to our allies, Great Britain. MLK doesn’t hold a candle to the accomplishments of Winston Churchill.

Why is this so difficult to understand?

1. Kenya was known as "British East Africa" under colonial rule.

2. Churchill was the Prime Minister of Great Britain when British troops crushed the Mau Mau Rebellion (1952 - 1960), which eventually led to the end of colonial rule and the creation of Kenya.

3. Communists and Socialists used the Mau Mau to push their leftest, statest, totalitarian agenda, in the name of social justice.

4. Obama was born in Kenya.

5. Obama is a communist.

6. Therefore, Obama hates Great Britain and Churchill because he sees them as colonial oppressors of the communist insurgence.

At least it isn’t a bust of Malcolm X.

“The welfare of each of us is dependent fundamentally on the welfare of all of us.”

—Now he’s even got the collectivist ideology woven into the carpets.

That quote piqued my interest, as well. I was curious as to the context. It was from a speech made on Labor Day at the annual fair of the New York State Agricultural Association. In the paragraph before the quote chosen by Obama, Teddy is speaking of how the farmer, wage-earner and business owner all tend to be hurt during bad economic times and do well in good economic times. The theme of the speech was one of not favoring one class over another and that the thing that should separate us are the ethical and unethical, not by class or whether we are poor or rich. It is telling that Obama doesn’t use the rest of the sentence. Granted it is long:

“The welfare of each of us is dependent fundamentally upon the welfare of all of us, and therefore in public life that man is the best representative of each of us who seeks to do good to each by doing good to all; in other words, whose endeavor it is not to represent any special class and promote merely that class's selfish interests, but to represent all true and honest men of all sections and all classes and to work for their interests by working for our common country.”

Roosevelt goes on to warn against thinking of people by what group they are a part of, which is exactly the way Democrats look at people: “A healthy republican government must rest upon individuals, not upon classes or sections. As soon as it becomes government by a class or by a section, it departs from the old American ideal.”

TR then talks about how favoring one class over another has been the doom of past republics: “The outcome was equally fatal, whether the country fell into the hands of a wealthy oligarchy which exploited the poor or whether it fell under the domination of a turbulent mob which plundered the rich.”

There were a couple of other quotes that Obama, whom I am sure has not read the entire speech, should note: “There is no worse enemy of the wage-worker than the man who condones mob violence in any shape or who preaches class hatred” “There is no room in our healthy American life for the mere idler, for the man or the woman whose object it is throughout life to shirk the duties which life ought to bring.” Of course, that last one pretty much defines the core Democrat constituency.

Finally, Teddy ends with this: “Finally, we must keep ever in mind that a republic such as ours can exist only by virtue of the orderly liberty which comes through the equal domination of the law over all men alike, and through its administration in such resolute and fearless fashion as shall teach all that no man is above it and no man below it.”

Replace the image of a man who helped defeat fascism with a communist.

Predictable.

King probably was a Republican in registration only. He supported JFK and LBJ and was strongly opposed to Goldwater. Towards the end of his life he denounced the Vietnam war and was a strong supporter of labor unions and socialism. He was in Memphis to support labor unions on strike when he was killed.

Churchill out, King Lincoln, TR, and Martin Luther King, Jr. in. How did they manage to leave out FDR and LBJ?

“Why is this so difficult to understand”?

...I never said it was “difficult to understand”. I said it was “another slap in the face to our allies”, which it is. At this point, we’re headed toward making Great Britain just as much of an enemy as Iran.

The room, with its lovely architectural features, paintings and classic wood furnishings, looks dull, and the furniture coverings and accessories look like rental pieces.

They could have done better for 2 million. This lovely room now looks cheesy...nuthin’ special.

Well, at least Manchelle didn't choose the black liberation colors of red/black, the colors of the dress she wore in Chicago post-inaugeration.

We're in a deep recession and they decorate.

Negative on his new striped wallpaper and tacky coffee table

I totally agree! I'm no interior decorator but, I got rid of the coffee table years ago and went to a sofa table. More open space. And gold lame looking drapes? UGH!
