He might figure it out when he loses his job or his home, or when his taxes go through the roof, or when his health insurance premiums go up and he can’t get the health care he needs, or he tries to post something on the internet and can’t because it’s censored. Some people won’t get it until the damage is already done and the consequences become personal.
