Parties Face Divisions in Florida
The Wall Street Journal ^ | August 26, 2010 | NAFTALI BENDAVID and PETER WALLSTEN

Florida Republicans extended a wary hand Wednesday to their new gubernatorial nominee, Rick Scott, who spent millions of dollars attacking them during the campaign, as Democrats reckoned with their own divisions in the race to lead the most populous battleground state.

National and state GOP leaders began reaching out to Mr. Scott, a former health care executive who defeated the candidate backed by the party establishment, Attorney General Bill McCollum. Mr. Scott and his aides, meanwhile, worked the phones to arrange meetings with party leaders, some of whom had assailed his business record.

"I'm the candidate for the Republican Party and the Republican Party will be very supportive because I've lived the dream they believe in," Mr. Scott said in an interview.

State records show Mr. Scott spent at least $38 million on his campaign. He contributed millions more to a political committee that aired ads on his behalf.

His victory sets up a tight race against Democratic nominee Alex Sink, a former bank executive who is now the state's elected chief financial officer. The race is pivotal for both parties, which see the governor's office as a key to winning this swing state in the 2012 presidential election.

I don't think McCollum ever had much of a chance.

He is as lack-luster as one can get...has all the charisma of potato.

Reminds me of "Mr. Peabody" in the old Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons.

Nevermind the “troubling” (implied media emphasis) fact that McCollum spent over 20 million of other people’s money. I’ll give Scott credit for putting his money where his mouth is, and for it, is beholden to nobody. McCollum’s money came from a long list of loibbyists and other “special interests”.

So who would we expect to be more in favor of “We The People” interests than some lobbying firm or “others” looking to benefit from the public trough, which includes CSX who is knee deep (pancakes scandal) in the “useless express” HSR project between Tampa and Orlando that our buddy Charlie has shoved down our gullets.

I can hear the rants coming that Scott stole that money. Well now, he left in 1997 after disagreeing with the BoD on not fighting the charges in court which eminated from his organizing opposition to HillaryCare. If he was guilty or even indictable of anything, where is his criminal or even arrest record?

Absolutely correct..McCollum ran a terrible campaign...BTW..note that 7% ( 100,000) FL Republicans voted for McAllister, a virtual unknown..( I did also) the equivalent of NONE OF THE ABOVE...and I suspect that if limited to only Scott or McCollum..80% would have voted for McCollum

Yep. In this household, one vote for McCalister and the other vote went to McCollum.

Unfortunately, in politics you have to play the hand you are dealt. I rarely am excited by the options when voting, I am almost always voting for the lesser of the evils. Reagan is the last vote I was really excited about.

Scott HAS to beat Sink! If Florida gets a Dem. governor, that will be devastating. FL is NOT a blue state and now that it’s purple we need to turn it back to a red state, NOW, before it’s too late.
