There are times when I flirt with the notion that the country would be better off with divided government.
If Republicans took control, say, of the House, there would be pressure on both parties to behave more responsibly. The GOP would be pushed to stop carping and posturing, and start governing. Democrats would have political cover to make hard choices on entitlement spending, taxes and the like. As every politician knows, bipartisan cliff-jumping is a safer sport than going solo.
That's the theory. Then there's John Boehner.
The man who would be speaker outlined his agenda Tuesday in a speech to the City Club of Cleveland — economic policy reduced to, literally, five easy tweets. The Ohio Republican offered up a depressing blend of tired ideas, tired-er one-liners ("We've tried 19 months of government-as-community organizer") and cheap attacks. The cheapest: calling for the firing of Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and economic adviser Larry Summers.
Boehner said recently that House Republicans would spend August listening to voters before announcing an agenda. Judging from Boehner's speech, they mostly listened to pollsters, whose big idea apparently was to say "job-killing" as often as possible.
Twelve times, actually. As in "job-killing tax hikes," "job-killing bills," "job-killing agenda," "job-killing federal regulations." This is bumper-sticker politics, not a real economic plan.
I've been skeptical that Democrats would get much political traction with their argument that the Republican agenda is just George W. Bush recycled, but speeches like Boehner's make me rethink

Boehner will be replaced! If that does NOT happen, the GOP will lose the initiative and fall flat regardless of their supposed platform (Have we not all had enough?).
I’m sure that you don’t see this, but maybe you should look at our GOP representatives and make a decision. Are you for the GOP or for the Republic?
I would say Obama long ago cornered the marked on bumper sticker slogans, and look where it got us. “Hope and change” “Change you can believe in” “Yes we can” “Organize for Change”

If there's one thing we've had quite enough of, it's "economic plans" from the government. Here's an idea: how about we have the government sit down, shut up, quit telling everyone what to do, and quit spending all the money. No more "plans." No more "programs." No more government trying to "plan" the economy. Get the damned government out of the economy! |
I hope so but I wouldn’t bet on that. He’ll likely be Speaker. Winning parties usually don’t jettison their leaders.
Time for YOU people to decide. Are you for the Republic or for you emotion based feelings about the GOP? Like it or not, the ONLY alternative right now to the Obama machine is the GOP. So which side are you on?
Past time you screamers quit acting as unpaid propaganda agents for the DNC and try fighting the Progressive Fascist media/political complex for a change. Time to actually try thinking for once instead of just clinging mindlessly to your knee jerk habit of shooting your own side in the back day in and day out.
Oh please. I am from Florida. The big government GOP here has expanded the size and scope of government and raised taxes and regulations. They Have been Bush style RINOS. We want less government and more freedom. You can hardly do business in this state with all the regulations. Illegals are running wild and the schools are filled with socialists. They are like the last Republican Congress under W. I say shake em up. And they are shaking this morning.

If you cannot understand the difference between $160 billion deficit for the whole year with the GOP and $164 billion deficit for the month of July 2010 alone, you are too willfully ignorant of what is currently going on in DC to be wasting our time commenting here.

I am a Republican, I’ve voted straight Republican up till now. That doesn’t mean I’m not gonna criticize GOP officials when it is warranted (which unfortunately is often). That doesn’t make me a “screamer” (?) or “ unpaid propaganda agent for the DNC” anymore than being self-righteous and hostile makes you correct or intelligent.

Boehner is a milktoast leader and we would be well served if someone else became Speaker.
I did get a kick out of Boehner’s Sarah Palin type one liners on democrats. It is always fun to see Dems squirm especially on the economy. But I wouldnt call that 'leading' at all. That is 'opposing'.
I agree 100%, Boehner has to go just like Republicans 17 years ago purged their RINOs in charge. He just is not a credible alternative to democrats on spending for the next Speaker. He even tried to say that Republicans in charge would not act like they (he) did when they (he)last held the congress. House Republicans need to elect someone as house leader that actually opposed those big spending policies, and someone who voted against TARP, to pass the laugh test.
The RINOs have their defenders of statism here, pay no attention to them. A few weeks ago MNJ actually cited No Child Left Behind and Medicare Prescription Drug entitlements as POSITIVE Republican ACCOMPLISHMENTS.
McConnell is worse than Boner.
