You picked the far most expensive states. That’s going to lead to a biased result that’s too high. I’d say it’s probably $200b a year or so, which isn’t nothing I’ll admit. But still, it’s a drop in the bucket compared to what wall street and the AIG/Goldmans/unions got.

Specifics are always a bitch. I use them to establish my bonafides and to shed light on those who whine instead of work.

There are a lot of people who think just because they picked up a modicum of knowledge they have value in the marketplace. That is flat-out wrong.

I have spent 30+ years working very hard to expand my knowledge base in many areas. I am unconcerned about my prospects, but, as I said upthread I have planned for the worst.

Hard work and planning as life and career strategy — no wonder some are running from me.

Ah, excuse me, I don’t know what your experience is, but this is something I know about personally. It’s highly insulting for you to suggest that people just want to collect unemployment. In my state unemployment means no more than $300 a week, and that comes to less than the local poverty level. Nobody wants that. Nobody wants to lose his home and possessions, or to face poverty and homelessness. It’s insane to suggest people want this.

I’ve been officially unemployed since April but I started looking for work long before that, because I knew this was going to happen. I spend most of every day looking for jobs in one way or another. I’ve got a good resume and have taken classes on how to apply for jobs, have had my resume tuned up by professionals, have exhausted every resource of state, county, and local government, have networked like mad. Still, I have not had a single interview. Five hundred other people in my office were laid off at the same time and have had the same experience; so far as I know only three or four of them have gotten jobs. We are all focused, competent people, and many of us having nursing or other supposedly valuable degrees. But no one even responds to applications.

I would be willing to take any job, but they don’t hire you for entry-level jobs when you’re in your fifties. Especially not at McDonald’s unless you’re a native Spanish speaker.

Glenn doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He doesn’t have the experience of applying for hundreds and hundreds of jobs and never having a call back. Probably you don’t either. But thirty million people in this country do. He’s outvoted.

P.S.: Please, spare me the helpful pep talk about how this was our fault for not going into a different field 25 years ago (we were working in healthcare research which is supposed to be a hot field), not updating our skills (mine are completely up-to-date and I keep getting more training as I can find money for it), not living in the right part of the US (I live in the DC suburbs where the unemployment rate is among the lowest in the US, we need to move to Texas (cannot for legal reasons related to my child), or if we all just tried harder we’d get those jobs. Yeah. We’ve heard it all already.

Also the two largest states with the highest unemployment rates. Look at the list Blood of Tyrants posted. Illinois is up over $500 a week and we have great sucking unemployment here. Big states with high unemployment rats skew the numbers. California, Illinois, and New York make up one quarter of the US population and all have unemployment rates 5% or more above the national average. Unfortunately those are also the ones with the high payouts.

I'm going to stick with the approximately $300 billion number. And half the US military budget isn't a drop in the bucket, no matter how you slice it. And it is going to fall disproportionately on states that are already on the verge of economic collapse. There will need to be tax increases to pay for it, despite your assurances to the contrary.

Maybe for the same reason you won't own your own arrogance. To assume that anyone who's been out of work for any extended period of time is lazy is not only an arrogant statement, it's also an ignorant one.
Oh, and by the way, I am employed at the same job I've been at for over 25 years. But I know literlly dozens of highly qualified people from the bottom grunt worker all the way up to corporate management in my field who have been without work for well over 2 years. And not one of them is lazy.
You are fortunate in that you are in a field that is still thriving, and have been able to expand your skillsets to adapt, and to make yourself more marketable. Count your blessings. Try being over 50 and having worked in the same industry, successefully, for decades and then find yourself unemployed through no fault of your own. I'm talking of the building industry. And there are others out there in the same boat. The auto industry, retail, transportation, and a myriad of others are in dire straits.
Again, my friend, count your blessings. And try on a little humility and compassion once in a while. You may need some in return some day.

You are correct. I have a physical condition (spine — YECH) that, when it flares, makes me into a bigger jerk than I am in RL (and that is saying something).

All I have said is true and my point was that you can’t ever relax: the way to stay employed is to work hard and stay current. Being an A$$hole like I was here is probably not a good strategy.

I would like to see the actual #’s, not vague estimates. They said 3 months of extension would be $36b, so it’s closer to my #’s if we go by that.

I’m also a believer in cutting taxes to increase revenue when possible, so I don’t believe raises are necessary now. Cutting the corporate taxes would increase jobs and revenue at this point for instance.
