Sarah Palin Gets Snarky on a Schoolteacher (Newsweak)
Newsweek ^ | August 09, 2010 | Ben Adler, journ0list

Posted on 08/09/2010 7:19:33 PM PDT by onyx

Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin's carefully crafted image as a regular hockey mom has taken a few hits since her unsuccessful vice presidential bid.

~snips~

But all those who wonder whether revelations of her personal prima donna qualities will damage her image are proceeding from an assumption that she does, in fact, disguise her self-centered side well in managed environments. I've long disagreed with that assessment, because her famous Facebook postings often have the tone of a nasty, snotty, slightly dense but popular high-school girl. Sample recent line: "Okay, Mr. President, you tell us we have to keep looking backward (as we’re steered toward the cliff)."

Palin's dark side came out in full effect this weekend, and this time the victim was not President Obama but a schoolteacher in small-town Alaska. Palin was there to film segment of a nature program on TLC, and she confronted Kathleen Gustafson who was holding up a sign reading "WORST GOVERNOR EVER." Palin clearly intended to disarm Gustafson with her charm, but instead got defensive.

Gustafson, said, "You swore on your precious Bible that you would uphold the interests of this state, and then when cash was waved in front of your face, you quit." To which Palin responded, her tone dripping with unamusing sarcasm, "Oh, you wanted me to be your governor! I’m honored! Thank you!" Palin went on to use the same tone of nasal condescension when saying she was "honored" that Gustafson considers her a celebrity.

It's true, schoolteachers are definitely not a Republican constituency, but anyone, even a Republican, running for president needs to make nice with them on a personal level, just as Democrats do with the military or police officers. This latest incident won't help Palin's negative favorability ratings.

Good for you and YW! My family from San Diego and I were in Biloxi last week! Like you said, clean, white sand beaches and lovely weather (I like it hot). We stayed at the Beau Rivage and had such a wonderful time -— drinking frozen Margarita’s in the pool and meeting wonderful people from your state and mine and even a few mice ones from LA...lol. (J/K - everyone was friendly and nice).

Enjoy yourself, dear kcvl. I wish I were there with you. I hated to come home and next year we plan to stay for 2 weeks! It’s beautiful beyond words.

Give Kathleen Gustafson some credit. Her fashion sense exceeds that of Michelle Obama, as her coiffure is perfectly coordinated with her haute couture utility suit.

Actually, the Washington Post Company just dumped the entire Newsweek operation for a grand total of $1 to the billionaire husband of California Congresscritter Jane Harman.

“We need statesmen/women, not cute _____, alluring winks and ‘Gotchas!’.”

Well, Servo, Kathleen Gustafson looks to be your candidate. Go to post 162. She ain’t cute. She couldn’t perform an “alluring wink” under hypnosis or pentothal and her “gotchas” are more guttural than “gotcha”.

It is not a liability for a political candidate to be an attractive person and personality. FDR, JFK and yes....Ronald Reagan come to mind.

Reagan was considered anything but a statesman during his pre-Presidential days. He was thought of by many superficial drones as a lightweight, “pretty boy” actor who once costarred with a chimp named Bonzo (not Servo; Bonzo)

Your snarky, crude appraisals of Sarah Palin’s physical attributes reek of misogynism and worse. You want to demean her by reducing her to the merely physical. I would have a little more respect for you (not much...a little) if you had the courage to repeat them in front of Todd Palin. But you wouldn’t do that.

Are any other former vice presidential “candidates” ever referred to this way?

Have you ever seen anything like this in your life? I am over 50 and I certainly have not. The election was almost two years ago yet liberals and the media still hound her relentlessly!

I’m 41 and I have never seen anything like it either. To be fair, she hounds them pretty relentlessly too (and deservedly so).

Most of the failed VP candidates that I can recall faded away after their failed run. Edwards did and was brought back to the spotlight by the scandal. Liebermann continued his Senate career. Beyond that, every failed VP nominee I can think of just went back to their career. Palin has not. She’s taken the fight to the liberals and God bless her for it!
