With great fanfare, Gov. Martin O'Malley on Wednesday announced his use of your tax dollars to track every move made by Maryland motorists. The Democratic chief executive will spend $2 million in federal grants to double the number of roadside and mobile spy cameras, with the data centrally collected at a "fusion center" accessible to government bureaucrats.ike speed cameras and red-light cameras, Mr. O'Malley's license-plate recognition cameras photograph the plates of passing motorists. Within a matter of seconds, a computer system looks up the vehicle owner's identity and cross-references it against a "wanted" list after recording the time, date and GPS coordinates of the vehicle. All of this information will be stored at the Maryland Coordination and Analysis Center located in Woodlawn, just outside Baltimore. Mr. O'Malley's plan is unique insofar as it allows tracking of persons of interest using cameras located in dozens of local jurisdictions. "We believe it's the first," Maryland State Police spokesman Gregory M. Shipley told The Washington Times. "It's certainly one of the first to network police [agencies] together like this."

I suspect the primary purpose of the system is to monitor the movements of, and facilitate the surveillance of, people who are disliked for "political" reasons.

Remember, Bush and many other republicans created the DHS in 2001/2002. This agency doled out grants for cameras left and right and this was while the GOP held both houses and the Presidency. They gave a grant to some town in the middle of no where AK to put 80 cameras. Don't think that electing a republican will stop the surveillance society from growing. At the very least it needs to be a non-establishment person.
If I were running for office part of my platform would be "privacy and civil liberties" (not including illegals) and I guarantee that would attract swing voters.
When people learn about this stuff they start hating it.

Hell, we had guys commuting to Towson from York, our department was originally in that location.
I moved to MD with the intention of moving to SE York county, I would’ve ended up leaving home at 6:30AM and getting back after sports at maybe 9:00PM. Now the traffic is worse.
If you work in Hunt Valley it makes a big difference, even the trip from HV to Towson can be a painful trek.
I don’t envy the trip down I-95 every morning. MD drivers from the north side of Baltimore are lousy, cell phones has made their inattention and spreading out all over the highway worse. Forget the fast lane there’s probably someone parked in it, possibly reading a book or paper while driving.
95 turns into a parking lot above the split at Rosedale every morning. I tried going north once on 95 at 4AM and the southbound lanes were packed and looked like rush hour years ago.
Ehrlich or Murphy, whichever one wins the primary, should take the contents of this editorial and pount them home to the voters of Maryland every chance they get. They can conclude their commercials with “Martin O’Malley IS the surveillance state!”

They’ll just say you’re in public so you have no expectation of privacy. Just like the cop...oh, er...not.

I mean, these are the same people who started the safety-belt stops and child-helmet laws, because it’s “for your safety”.

And that is EXACTLY why I hate these concepts. Why I hate red-light cameras, etc.
The way our whole country is going (never mind MD), there should be no doubt they will use whatever they can against you. And that includes autos on the periphery of the “tracking” - hey, we saw you were here at XX time so that surely incriminates you for YY action.
And PA will pay for it, more and more, as basically liberal MDers move in - they want to avoid high prices and taxes, but they still vote for the same !$#!@$@. So they will end up with high prices and taxes again.
Hitler documentaries on TV, they read some of the writings from the time, personal letters and other sources. I don’t remember the exact source, I do remember the Eva Braun quote from her personal letter.
Google Hitler was gay, you’ll find a lot of hits and those Libs probably have scrubbed a bunch more.

That book was published in 2001 years after the same rumor was on TV.
A&E, History and Discovery channels were competing heavily back in the 90s for market share and actually put out some decent programs. I can’t remember which one, travel and moving around the channels were different, but at home they were clustered in the 35-38 range. It very well may have been A&E because I don’t remember watching the other two that often and don’t even know when my old cable company picked them up.
And what’s next? A telescreen in every house that is on 24x7x365?
It isn’t technically an “invasion of privacy” but, you’re trying to have a war zone where intelligence flights and spy sats are looking for troop movements. I do not even know how you can make that comparison.
Spying upon “law abiding citizens” is an abridgment of your due process. Every citizen is proven guilty until innocent? True, officers lie, and cameras don’t, but, don’t you feel just slightly violated knowing that your movements are being tracked in what is supposed to be a FREE country?
Yep, you know it. Even though the handgun shell casing database is defunct, they still collect and store the shell casings, wasting who knows how many tax payer dollars to administer the paper work and collection and storage.

Every “public servant” should be exposed to 100% financial transparency while in office. Their personal bank accounts, investment holdings and tax returns should be available on-line for public scrutiny. The process would of itself select for those interested in genuine “public service” and would effectively “auto-term” limit them as no one would stand for that for more than 2-3 years.
