With great fanfare, Gov. Martin O'Malley on Wednesday announced his use of your tax dollars to track every move made by Maryland motorists. The Democratic chief executive will spend $2 million in federal grants to double the number of roadside and mobile spy cameras, with the data centrally collected at a "fusion center" accessible to government bureaucrats.ike speed cameras and red-light cameras, Mr. O'Malley's license-plate recognition cameras photograph the plates of passing motorists. Within a matter of seconds, a computer system looks up the vehicle owner's identity and cross-references it against a "wanted" list after recording the time, date and GPS coordinates of the vehicle. All of this information will be stored at the Maryland Coordination and Analysis Center located in Woodlawn, just outside Baltimore. Mr. O'Malley's plan is unique insofar as it allows tracking of persons of interest using cameras located in dozens of local jurisdictions. "We believe it's the first," Maryland State Police spokesman Gregory M. Shipley told The Washington Times. "It's certainly one of the first to network police [agencies] together like this."

And these same libs complained of monitoring phone calls of TERRORISTS under the evil Bush administration after 911.
The Libertarian ping list has much to point out.
One 308 round per camera.
I hate this state.
Unfortunately, there are very few Republicans in the Maryland state legislature.
Just so I have this straight - you can’t ask people who might be illegal aliens for the ID they’re supposed to carry after they get stopped for a crime but it’s okay to spy on law abiding citizens and track their location when they haven’t done anything wrong.
What happens when they go to satellite like the Brits are going to start using soon? Do you have a bullet big enough to reach it?
bttt
Isn’t Maryland the state where they made it a felony to videotape encounters with LE?
Video for me...but not for thee.
The Stasi would have loved something like this.
Dhimmis are fascists as well as cowards.
parasites and worse
I can’t believe the whacked out Lefty’s support stuff like this. Aren’t they supposed to be uber-Civil Libertarians ?
How about tracking every move of the Elitists in government? Watch all the monies handed to them under the table or their dirty deeds in the dark of night?
“I cant believe the whacked out Leftys support stuff like this. Arent they supposed to be uber-Civil Libertarians ?”
You got it back asswards. Lefty’s are like Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini.
Anyone with a decent education would know that. What we weren’t taught was that Hitler was a vegetarian queer, poor Eva Braun complained she would only be having anal sex.
Probably they sold it in gov't circles as a way to gain information on terrorists' movements *after the fact*, to aid in criminal prosecution of the perps. Just look how well the prosecution of the 1st 9-11 attack (car bomb in the underground garage) did to preven the 2nd 9-11 (passenger jets flown into the buildings).
NO cheers, unfortunately. We should be keeping jihadists out of the country altogether.
This is an exaggeration.
They are simply using technology to substitute for a boot on the ground. Surely you dont complain that the Air Force uses a predator drone controlled by an airman in Nevada to take out a bad guy in Afghanistan?
They are not spying. They are enforcing the existing laws with technology instead of people.
What freedom is being lost, other than the freedom to break a law? And you still have that freedom, it just becomes a bit more expensive because you will be caught more often. I understand this is simply a tax increase, but I don't see freedom being lost through better enforcement of existing laws.
Lets change that. This url has info for local, state and federal 2010 candidates accross the state. With links to their campaign sites.
