Newsweek Editor Jon Meacham to Exit After Sale
Wall Street Journal ^ | August 2, 2010 | Russell Adams

Newsweek editor Jon Meacham is planning to announce Monday that he will resign from the magazine after its expected sale to audio equipment magnate Sidney Harman, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Mr. Meacham took over as editor of Washington Post Co.-owned publication in October 2006.

His resignation ends a 15-year career at Newsweek that began in 1995 when he joined Newsweek as a writer. He became national affairs editor soon after that and was named managing editor in November of 1998.

Sale price $1...way to protect value.

I hope the new guy cleans house of the left wing scum who nest there.

Doubt it. They took his bid because he said he’d lay off the fewest people

More than anyone else, he knew he’d better start looking out for number one, himself, and that any last promoting of Newsweek he did was just to sustain his parachute out.

Harmon’s husband...91 years old.

Would seem a straw purchase.

Wonder who is behind this farce.

Since the thing is circling the drain, I think he is going to have lay off about half of the “journalists” who are on the staff now (they have already laid off half), and start using more free lance. Bias = layoffs.

Maybe she’s worried about re-elect and needs a job. Or maybe they are going to give a home to all the Journolist writers?

It’s still a BAD investment.

It was sold to Harman for the price of $1 with the condition that there would be no housecleaning or cutting of staff. They - the Washington Post - actually turned down better offers for this one. See:

I’m speechless. Dums sure have low standards for trophy wives.

I watch Morning Joe when I can stand it, and I’ve seen enough of Jon Meacham to know he’s a poster boy for white liberals men. He’s effeminate, smug, is very well educated, but doesn’t seem to grasp the meaning of all he knows.

In short, he’s useless.

Can you imagine working on an editorial team that has all of its covers set for 2010?

Week 37: Barack Obama
Week 38: Michelle Obama (toned arms and how to get them)
Weeek 39: Barack Obama
Week 40: Obama Family (end of summer holiday special)
Week 41: Barack Obama (salutes troops as they exit Iraq)
Week 42: Michelle Obama (back to school lunch ideas)
....and so on...

There was a day when she was younger and the California girl she still tries to be.

Just a guess but I'm getting a mental image of a graph showing the decline of ad revenue, ad pages, circulation, net income, etc. (all trending from upper left to lower right) over the period covering the time this clown ran the magazine. A real testament to his business acumen and ability to resonate with the American spirit. Put it on his tombstone.

If I were Harmon, my first order of business would be to fire this guy, wait a week, and then fire all the employees who criticized that first decision. Harmon may have bought Newsweek for its value as a tax deduction but I don't think he needs it to hemorrhage money like the state of California or the US government.

Quite the achievement. Take the helm of a profitable magazine and step down the day it sells for $1. He may want to indulge in some creative writing on his resume. We know he is capable of creative writing, so things are looking up for him.

The problem with publications like Time is that those who inhabit those type organizations do not understand that they do not understand. There is an old proverb which applies here:

"If a man knows not and knows not that he knows not, shun him, for he is a fool. If a man knows not and knows that he knows not, teach him, for he is a child. If a man knows and knows that he knows, follow him, for he is wise."
