I think conservatives mostly mishandled this issue as well.
As far as I’m concerned, I think we should APPLAUDE Senator Kerry for doing everything he legally can do to lower his tax bill.
All I ask is that he and the Dems recognize that the rest of us legitimately want to do the same.
Why is it that one lesson Dems never take away from a situation such as this is that TAXES CHANGE BEHAVIOR? They continue to think that they can tax and tax and no one will react in ways to avoid those taxes (legally and illegally).
For example, they impose a monstrous paperwork requirement on small business so as, in their minds, to ensure vendors filling orders over $600 pay taxes. Yet it never occurs to them how many orders will now ring up at $599.
So, personally, I thank Senator Kerry for modeling the true fact that taxes do, indeed, change behavior, and that — no matter how much money one has — it’s human nature for people to want to conserve their money for use as they, not the government, see fit.
Now if only Kerry and the Rats would see that we little people feel the same. Moreover, this is all the Tea Party is about -— saying hey, Washington, we’re sick and tired of your exhorbitant “boat taxes” and we want more of our own money!
That's all well and good but doesn't Effin' Kerry REPRESENT the peoples of Massachusetts? Maybe he would enjoy living in Rhode Island - but he doesn't. Avoiding taxes is cool - but insisting the rich pay more, while avoiding paying the fair share, doesn't go over too good with the peon voters.
I will never applaud hypocrisy. Now if Senator Kerry was constantly screaming against taxes, then I might forgive him. Same reason I don’t forgive Spitz for cavorting with whores, or, conversely, any of the anti-gay politicians who turn out to be gay themselves.
Hypocrisy has just never sat well with me.
