Kerry bolts tax questions: ‘Can I get out of here, please’
Boston Herald ^ | Monday, July 26, 2010 | Thomas Grillo

A fidgety U.S. Sen. John F. Kerry tacked away from the press in Weymouth today, ducking questions about taxes for his luxury yacht.

Following remarks at the South Weymouth Naval Air Station, Kerry - still recovering from hip replacement surgery - was able to make a quick exit from a press pack.

A clearly perturbed Kerry was not happy when questions were thrown out as he was climbing into his SUV.

“I have said consistently we will pay our taxes. We always pay our taxes. It’s not an issue period,” the Bay State’s senior senator said.

When asked if he berthed the boat in Massachusetts since he bought it, Kerry responded: “It depends on who owns it.” Then Kerry said, “Can we get out of here please.”

The Herald reported Friday that Kerry did not pay the states 6.25 percent sales tax on his 76-foot luxury yacht, the Isabel, which he bought in March for $7 million and now docks in sales-tax free Rhode Island.

A Kerry spokesman claimed the old sea dog wasn’t avoiding paying his fair share.

Kerry appeared to have sailed clear past a $437,000 tax bill to his cash-strapped state by mooring the Isabel in Rhode Island. He also could owe another $70,000 in annual excise taxes.

A Kerry spokesman previously told the Herald the Isabel was moored in Newport for long-term maintenance and not to take advantage of the Ocean States tax-free climate. The senator would pay any taxes he’s found to owe, the spokesman said.

The ship (it looks like a boat, but seems larger somehow) has very nice lines.

"This topic is no longer available."

Purged kinda quickly, I'd say. (Could be that it won't play on my W2K computer?)

“We pay every penny of taxes that we haven’t been able to evade.” quoth Jean Fraude Kerrie (who served in Viet Nam and never shot himself in the derriere).

That’s for goods transports though. This is a personal yacht.

I hope Kerry continues to do this - it is the right thing to do. Individual states have the right to establish their own sales and use tax system. Citizens in this country still have the right to choose where to live or where to shop. Maybe this will send a message to Massachusetts that their tax code is onerous. The cost of the yacht is irrelevant to the principle.

I'll bet he ponies up for political expediency, though.

If I have to pay, he has to pay. Especially since he is the Senator from MA. He likes raising taxes, he can pay them just like me and you.

His wife and him pay less on a percentage basis than we do by parking their money in muni bonds BTW

Sorry. I disagree. Competition between the states is good for the whole. You and I still have a right to choose where to live, where to spend our money. It is a principle of liberty which is more important than the cost of the yacht.

I will not buy a computer in Cook County because the sales tax there is much higher than the county I live in. Same priciple, different dollars.

My personal sense of liberty will not change because I think Kerry is an a$$.
