People walking the streets armed with guns must be dangerous, right? The Brady Campaign and the Violence Policy Center keep claiming that even those individuals who have legally obtained permits to carry concealed handguns are extremely dangerous. With millions of Americans already having been issued such permits from the various states, this is an important issue.
The gun control organizations have frequently made these claims in the press. The Associated Press articles by Erik Schelzig and by Jim Abrams have given extensive, uncritical coverage. Members of the gun control organizations have made these claims unchallenged on such places as Fox News and on the Huffington Post. But the gun control advocates inaccurately describe many shooting cases, choosing to ignore that the majority of incidents involve people properly defending themselves.
Over the past three years, the number of active permit holders in the United States has gone from about 5 million to more than 6.2 million today. The numbers issued by the state regulatory agencies show time after time that these permit holders abide by the law. . . .

If that were true with all those guns, there would be massacres of hundreds of thousands. I have a gun and it has yet to leap from my hands and attack innocent people. What a pack of bastards!
Most states now have some form of ccw permits. I believe Florida was the 1st. The anti’s said there would be blood in the streets, OK Corral, bodies stacked like cordwood........... They repeated this dribble every time another state voted to allow ccws. They trot this trype out on every gun control issue and the MSM repeats it every time just as if it were new.
Lying, for Liberals and Muslims, is perfectly acceptable behavior in pursuit of their “noble” ends.
Thinking that these laws keep us safer is nonsense. Just look at DC -- toughest gun laws; worst gun violence record.
But thinking that permits and licensing might increase the number of bad guys with guys is just plain stupid.
But, yes, you are correct that every time a state went to Shall issue the left predicted a blood bath and it hasn't happened yet, in fact the states with the most lenient gun laws usually have the lowest crime rates.
John, if this is actually THE John Lott, you have made a huge difference over the years. I, for one, am deeply grateful.
Last year there was a very well written article that dove into the crime stats reported by the FBI and for the life of me I cannot find it anywhere. I think it was a link I found on the Gun Owners of America website.
But it detailed the crime rates for various groups.
From convicted felons, people convicted of misdemeanor, all the way down to those with state issued HCP and even Police Officers.
While convicted felons not surprisingly were the biggest piece of the pie. CHP holders were so small a group, less than 1%. The FBI said the number was statically insignificant.
Infact they said that Police Officers were far higher as a group to be charged with homicide than HCP Holders.
Year over year average, 1 out of every 1,875 (53.3 per 100k) Police Officers will be accused of homicide, per the UCR.
Nationwide IIRC they said that during the 10 year period they researched less than 500 HCP Holders were accused of any arrest-able offenses, much less homicide.
I was living in Hattiesburg MS when they were considering a law to make open carry legal. The media were constantly referring to it as taking us back to the Wild West.
They ignored the fact that other states had passed similar legislation without everyone turning into a gunfighter.
I also remember a local TV station having a Hattiesburg policeman on regarding “assault rifles”. This idiot said that they could not be used for hunting as they were so powerful that there would be nothing left if you hit a deer with one.
Asking for honesty, accuracy, or integrity from the anti gun crowd is basically asking too much.
Amen, Laz. And thank you John R Lott.
The columns and the books are like the Gospel, and non-believers can’t/won’t hear or see the truth. Still, the research and the great language are so useful in argument.
Thanks John!
Gun Talk Ping List BANG!
Florida wasn’t first by any means. It just made the most noise when they changed the laws, first to allow anyone to legally keep a loaded gun in his car, then to issue carry permits, then to issue non resident carry permits.
Thanks 50, good thread. Some people will never get it.
My gawrsh, they could SHOOT YOU DEAD! *Shiver*
Years ago I recall a BATF agent being interviewed (I think it was by Katie Couric) and he was showing the interviewer the history of the ammo of choice of criminals throughout the decades. first he stood up on end a .22 caliber bullet and claimed it was the ammo of choice of criminals in the 1930s. On he went, .32, .38, .45 being the ammo of choice throughout the 1950s, 60s, etc. He finished his demonstration with a .50 caliber round, claiming that was the ammo of choice of criminals these days.

Thanks for the ping!
