Family and pediatrician tangle over gun question
It was a question Amber Ullman least expected Wednesday from her children's pediatrician.
Do you keep a gun in the house?
When the 26-year-old Summerfield woman refused to answer, the Ocala doctor finished her child's examination and told her she had 30 days to find a new pediatrician and that she wasn't welcome at Children's Health of Ocala anymore.
"Whether I have a gun has nothing to do with the health of my child," said the mother of three girls.

This so-called ‘doctor’ wouldn’t have to tell me to find a new pediatrician. I would have gathered my daughter’s clothes, told the guy to go eff himself and found a new one that afternoon. It’s none of their damn business.
If my daughter needed emergency care and Children’s Health of Ocala was the closest hospital and they refused treatment, they would find out if we kept a gun in the house real quick.
Shut up and heal, you arrogant POS.

Yes, the AMA started this. Keep in mind that over 80% of doctors have a negative opinion of the AMA.

I'm thinking....it's time...to start answering the question THIS way....."Of course I have a gun. I'm a responsible parent who wants to protect my family from harm. Don't YOU? Do you think the police will be there when someone breaks in? I consider anyone who does not keep a gun to be irresponsible and a bad parent." Then, I'd walk out.

I don’t understand why we follow this silly notion that a. we need a pediatrician, and b. they have any right to give us advise on any thing.
We go to a family doc if and when anyone is sick. There hasn’t been a reason to go in nearly 4 years.

And these are the records that the govt will have electronic access to...
Back door registration lists...
I suspect she will have little if any recourse...the AMA and CDC have been pushing this for some time...

This is very common. Pediatricians across the country are asking this question. --
It's one of several "standard" questions. I lie, and the kids know to, as well. It's a big joke with us.
As for a doctor choosing to dump a patient over refusal to answer, I'd file a formal complaint with the licensing board. It's a non-medical question, you have no obligation to answer (and indeed, a false answer does not affect a course of treatment), so the doctor lacks sound basis for terminating the health care relationship.
It's unfortunate, but in general, a patient should not presume a doctor is trustworthy. Doctors have as much or more power to have a person incarcerated as police do; and can also initiate removal of a child from the home. Be guarded in your conversations.

My niece is a pediatric nurse and she says that the American Academy of Pediatrics started recommending that pediatricians ask the question some time ago. Also,I wouldn't be at all surprised if there's been one or more court judgments/settlements involving a kid harmed by a firearm whose pediatrician failed to ask about guns and, thus, was “negligent”.

Right. But you would have no grounds upon which to bring legal action.

I would ask, "Are you a child molester?" "Why were particularly attracted to treating just children?
If s/he gets insulted, tell him/her they insulted you by playing attorney and questioning your 2nd amendment rights.
Or, just do like a democrat, and lie.

On what grounds? I would think the doctor can ask what he wants and you don’t have to go there. Just wondering.

This has gone one for years. The American Association of Pediatrics has been pushing this for years.
About fifteen years ago a physician handed me a list with those questions on it. I got a large marker and wrote "None of your damned business" across the entire page and handed it back to him.
He didn't have to advise me to find another physician. I cancelled our appointment that afternoon and told him why.

"I want to let parents know that there could be consequences if you refuse to answer a question that you feel is private," she said. "Now my children have to suffer because of this and that's not right.">>>>>>>>>>>>> That is where its headed, and thats why the questions are being recommended by pediatric professional oversight groups in each state. It has nothing to do much with keeping children safe, which is a parents responsibility, not the physicians, nor the states. It has to do wih gun control, and forcing people who have guns to get rid of them if they want Obama public health care, which soon will be the only option for most families.
Like the doctor says, he has a list of all the families who haveguns that they will later have to get rid of or be uninsured.
Don't you just love fascism? ( sarc.)
And so the population will become disarmed if it wants health care.
And like those living under totalitarian regimes around the world,Americans have to learn to lie.
