Iran Says It Has 100 Vessels For Each US Warship

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - A former naval chief in Iran's Revolutionary Guard says his country has set aside 100 military vessels to confront each U.S. warship that poses a threat.

Gen. Morteza Saffari is quoted by the conservative weekly Panjereh Saturday as saying that troops aboard U.S. warships are "morsels" for Iran to target in the event of any American threat against Iran.

To be honest with everyone here, I believe it has been discussed in various Naval circles that “mob” attacks by small vessels is an actual vulnerability and that larger naval vessels would actually have a hard time preventing sever losses. What our ships need in my opinion is an Aegis-type system capable of targeting small surface vessels in the same way it targets incoming missles and air attacks. The Aegis was designed when it was determined that swarm attacks by missles and bombers would be catastrophic to a CAG. The surface mob attack is a logical method for inflicting great harm to a naval force, especially in the tight confines of the persian gulf.

I believe we have a phrase for that.

It's known as a "target-rich environment."

I think a huge reason is that for some reason, people in the US seem determined to avoid getting their hands dirty and actually SOLVING the problems that happen. They keep waiting for someone to come along, do the work, act scandalized in public, but in secret they pat them on the head and then get rid of them.

I swear, the US is just like pre-revolutionary, Imperial China.

I remember reading in the Navy Times back during the Cold War, about a Soviet Navy Ship and a U.S Navy Ship passing each other, when the Soviet ship signaled with it’s signal lamp, “How’s the second largest Navy in the World?”. The U.S. ship signaled back, “Just fine thank you, How’s the second best?”

Is the Iranian formal naval chief speaking from a position of bluster or from his faith in the naval strategy of swarming your bigger opponent with many (100) small craft? Read the NY Times article of January 12, 2009 titled “Iran Encounter Grimly Echoes ’02 War Game” by Thom Shanker (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/12/washington/12navy.html). While I am always suspicious of NY Times material, I thought about the substance of the article when I read this post. Can such a strategy overwhelm the US Navy’s defensive systems and sailors ability to address all the inbound threats?

Got it covered. See:

Block 1B Phalanx Surface Mode (PSUM) incorporates a side mounted Forward Looking Infrared Radar (FLIR) which enables CIWS to engage low slow or hovering aircraft and surface craft. Additionally, the FLIR assists the radar in engaging some ASCM’s bringing a greater chance of ship survivability. Block 1B uses a thermal imager Automatic Acquisition Video Tracker (AAVT) and stablilization system that provide surface mode and electro-optic (EO) angle track. These Block 1B enhancements will allow day/night detection capability and enable the CIWS to engage small surface targets, slow-moving air targets, and helicopters.

yeah I see that but the experts are still debating whether or not it is adequate. supposedly the SeaRam is a missle system which is supposed to improve close in combat capabilities but it is still in development. the fact that they are working on several different systems and tieing them together I believe to be an admission that we are currently vulnerable to this kind of attack. It just takes one suicide boat loaded with explosives to take out one of our guys (uss cole) so i get nervous when i see our guys here on FR dismissing the Irnanian threat as a big joke, thats all

I have a serious question:

Why is it that in the Islamo-whacko world the most ludicrous statements can be uttered by prominent figures and they don’t get laughed out of their countries?

OK, I do realize that the same can be said about virtually every country in the world, given the prevalence of socialist utopian fantasies in public life, but still, the “Baghdad Bob” utterances of so many political, military, cultural, and religious “leaders” in the world of Islam do often fall into depths of demented fantasy that even the Michael Moores of our world have trouble keeping up with....
