Sen. John Kerry, who has repeatedly voted to raise taxes while in Congress, dodged a whopping six-figure state tax bill on his new multimillion-dollar yacht by mooring her in Newport, R.I.

He'll probably die a posthumous Florida resident like Rose Kennedy.
“New Zealand built” What’s the matter Jacque, American made not good enought or could you not find an American yacht builder after the tax you voted for devastated the industry?
Very curious what will happen with Ted’s estate. I’m sure there will be be shenanigans, but to what extent is the question.....
Even taking the simpler? case of living in three states with housing in each for 4 months each (more like the JF’nKs), it would seem to be problematic.
Doesn’t MASS Registry of Motor Vehicles ask folks to narc on neighbors who register their cars in NH or RI in order to avoid the higher taxes? It seems to me that this should be a slam dunk case of tax evasion.
Democrats are experts on the subject of tax breaks for the rich.
Is this the same John Kerry that served in Viet Nam?
I have no idea how those RV camp sites work. If you rent a lot for a few months, is that considered your residence? I suppose with no utility bills you really don’t need snail mail. Banking & credit cards can be handled on-line.
Must feel like the pioneers. Do we have any pilgrims on FR????
I wonder why Kerry did not have the boat built in a US yard with American workers. Hasn’t he been a vocal critic of people who outsource.
Don't know if you remember but when Fat Teddy's mother died (worth *many* millions) he filed her estate for probate in Florida rather than Massachusetts despite the fact that she hadn't set foot *outside* of Massachusetts...or *in* Florida...for the 11 years immediately preceding her death. That,as I suspect you figured out,was because at that time Florida didn't have any state death tax whereas Massachusetts had a big one.
Sometime in the 90's (can't recall when) I called DOR Headquarters in Boston asking why this was allowed to happen and was told "we don't discuss such matters with the public".
So I'm sure that John F'ing Kerry knows that he has nothing to fear from his bosom buddy,Coupe Deval.
If one began just traveling around the country in a motor home, leaving ones home state and selling all real estate there, how could one get a drivers license and plates when not living in any state long enough to establish residency (usually 3 to six months)?
Simple, claim you are an illegal alien and they won’t ask any further questions. You can also drop any insurance on your motor home. Need tags? Steal them from the nearest Wal Mart. Claim you live in a sanctuary city. Pick one. Hell, when you need money just drop by a welfacre office and load up. Life is good when you are an international migrant with no papers.
That, and tax cheating for the rich.
Just trying to save some of Teresa’s money.

You rent a store front mail box in Texas (or one of the other other no-income-tax states) and have your mail forwarded to wherever you plan to be for a while. In Texas, you can renew your driver's license through the mail at least once (you do have to show up every decade or so to get a new picture) and you can get your license places renewed through the mail (it's just a 2 x 3 sticker).
As for the IRS, I guess they send me something, but I file my taxes electronically, so I don't need the little label they require for mailed returns.
Remember the first President Bush claimed a motel room in Houston as his permanent residence? It was just a fancier variation on this theme. And no telling how much it saved the Bush family in taxes they otherwise would have had to pay to Maine.
Dems are such hypocrites.
