As soon as much of the available evidence suggested that Shirley Sherrod had become the victim of a rush to judgment by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, it became clear President Barack Obama had a mushrooming political problem on his hands.
Sherrod went from being the villain of the piece to a figure drawing great empathy from millions, not the least of which was conservative talk show host Glen Beck.
And among those who were most closely watching the presidents handling of affair were important members of the presidents base, people he could ill afford to alienate: African Americans and liberals.
While Obama remains popular, his poll numbers are significantly lower than they were earlier in the year. His support among independents who helped propel him to the presidency has steadily eroded.
That was worrisome enough for Democrats during a mid-term election year.
But then the Sherrod affair threatened to hurt the president with some of the most members of the Democratic base.

This White House never has a calculated response to a given situation. It is always a reaction.
And, *THAT* was Breitbart's original point. I'll be glad when the "Shirley Sherrod Side-Show" is over, and AB fires his next salvo into the NAACP...

Nor will they, until perhaps the next salvo hits home, or even, perhaps the one after that. The NAACP is truly off-balance with this, they panicked, which caused the administration to panic, and thus the entire "Shirley Sherrod Side-Show", which goes even further to making them all look like the "gang that couldn't shoot straight". It's going to be a long two and a half years for them, with Palin, Breitbart, Beck, and Limbaugh *all* inside their decision-making loop. Expect even more panicked moves as time goes on, as these jamokes haven't the faintest clue as to how to react effectively to what's being done to them...

He gave the NAACP exactly what it wanted, the problem was, the NAACP, even though *they* were in posession of the full tape, panicked, wanted the story gone, and decided that Sherrod would have to sacrifice herself to achieve that end. They contacted AgSec Vilsak, who, in turn, contacted Obama, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Right about now, the NAACP is collectively crapping their drawers. They now know, without doubt, that Andrew Breitbart is gunning for them, for the stupid war they decided to start by falsely implying the Tea Party movement is racist. He hit hard in the first salvo, making them look completely stupid, and now, they can only await the next, without knowing exactly how much ammunition he has.
Breitbart has shown himself to be a master at this, with his takedown of ACORN, and the NAACP now knows that they have, by their own actions declared themselves to be "NEXT"...
To paraphrase the late General George S. Patton, "I almost pity the poor bastages, by God, I almost do!"

I agree with you on all points. At the same time, we don’t want to overlook every aspect of this — including the NAACP racism.
