David Cameron has launched his "big society" drive to empower communities, describing it as his "great passion"..

In a speech in Liverpool, the prime minister said groups should be able to run post offices, libraries, transport services and shape housing projects.

Also announcing plans to use dormant bank accounts to fund projects, Mr Cameron said the concept would be a "big advance for people power".

As well as encouraging greater volunteering and philanthropy, Mr Cameron confirmed plans to use funds stuck in dormant bank and building society accounts to enable "some of the most dynamic" charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to take over the running of public services.

Well, this should remove all doubt. Conservatism is long-dead in the UK.

If you review what he has said in the past, we all could have deduced that he was just another TINO.

So is he basically re-introducing the idea of local government? I don’t get it.

Well, this is the logical end of liberalism. They are simply confiscating wealth for social programs. Anyone with any money in Britain should pull it out right now and invest it overseas.
Stick a fork in them, they are done.

So much for trying to locate next-of-kin of holders of dormant bank accounts. Who will make the final determination that an account is dormant - the affirmative action hires?

Much potential for abuses exist in this scheme.

"So is he basically re-introducing the idea of local government?"

BBC has kind of buried the lead. The problem isn't necessarily with Cameron trying to privatize some social programs. It's where they're getting the funding that's the problem.

Cameron is proposing Brits that have bank accounts that sit "dormant" for more than 15 years, effectively forfeit those funds. They're taking tax collection to a whole 'nother level.

As if those funds are actually sitting in the bank being useless to their owners and society—instead of being lent out for others to use while the owner receives a smidge of interest and what used to be security.

Actually, It’s a step in a conservative direction. He’s saying people need to make these activities happen through their own initiative.

Anyway, I don’t see our “Conservatives” in Congress matching Cameron... in many areas Cameron is more conservative than our so called “Conservatives”

Who has called for across the board cuts in the Federal budget? Who is speaking out against the excesses of the political class, including Congressmen and Senators? Who will cut social programs in the US? Cameron is making these types of moves in the UK and his polling numbers are going up.

Well, although its very neccesary, “Let’s tighten our belts and reduce the national debt” isn’t exactly a mighty rallying cry. He’s looking for an idea to inspire, and he’s putting forward “people power” as that idea.

Your statement sidesteps my point very nicely.

OK well I shall address it directly. No I don’t think he’s doing this for MUSLIM empowerment, although as the muslims tend to be concentrated in certain areas where they have a local majority that could theoretically be an unintended consequence. However, local government in the UK is very much subordinated to national government (unlike in the US). A local government authority can introduce by-laws that complement national law, but they cannot introduce laws contrary to it. These “Sharia Law” councils that you read about can make all the pronouncements that they like, but none of them have legal force if they are contrary to British law. They work because the parties in the dispute legally AGREE to abide by their judgements.
