BP delays key test on Gulf of Mexico oil well

BP has delayed a key test on a newly installed well cap aimed at stopping the flow of oil in the Gulf of Mexico.

BP and US Coast Guard officials said further analysis was needed before pressure testing could begin.

If it proves successful, the well will be kept "shut in" and the leak halted until relief wells plug it entirely.

The blown-out well has been spewing oil into Gulf waters since April. The US administration has sent BP and other parties a new bill for the clean-up.

The administration says the latest bill is for $99.7m (£65.8m).

The oil giant has already fully paid the last three bills totalling $122.2m (£80.6m) for costs related to response and clean-up of the spill, according to the Obama administration.'No promises'

The test in the Gulf of Mexico, which was supposed to begin on Tuesday, will determine whether BP's new cap can contain the oil.

Coast Guard chief Admiral Thad Allen said the extra analysis would continue into Wednesday.

This latest move to stop the oil comes a day after the containment cap was placed on the leaking well.

The sealing cap system never before has been deployed at these depths or under these conditions”

Work on the permanent relief well solution continues.

BP Vice-President Kent Wells said no promises could be made about whether the new cap would work.

"It's not simple stuff. What we don't want to do is speculate around it," he said.

Shutting in the well would provide a temporary solution to the leaking oil. BP is continuing work on the relief well that is expected permanently to stop the oil.

And here is why we heard nothing all day about any tests.

Some talk on the oil Drum as to why the delay...after the seismic test...and that the delay means they saw something that was ominous or ...whatever....

Milk that “Silver Bullet” for all it’s worth!
I expect more problems & delays.
I really do hope this works.

FYI - When they do the pressure tests later, the ROV video feeds will be useless to determine the value of the increased internal pressure. Here is why. From the July 13th 2:30 PM BP Tech Briefing.

Kent Wells: Yes, the pressure information we’ll be getting is actually coming from transducers and so you won’t see pressure gauges on ROV feeds. These will be – these are highly, highly accurate information that will be coming to surface and gets converted into the pressures and the scientists will be monitoring that real time. I think they get measurements every 12 seconds or something like that.

Simmons is praying for the BOP to fall over or shoot out of the mud.

Oh...thanks for that info...didn't know that.

Everyone is pretty fixated in watching the ROV's and making judgments....

Yes, I saw gas and oil come out of the sea bed a long time ago. They panned the camera over it real fast.

Obama and BP know the sea floor is compromised already so I guess they are just playing a game with this new cap crap for the public to show they have done all they could and now have to try nuking it.

They are going to nuke it.

Obama and BP know the sea floor is compromised

That's the big question. And if it is, shutting off the top is not a good idea.

They are going to nuke it.

Hope not. Got a bad feeling about that nuke. Especially since the Russians are suggesting we go that route and they just happen to have a video showing how they utilized a nuke successfully. At any rate, the second relief well has been stopped at a location where they can have more options available to them if the first Relief Well fails. Kent Wells states that in the transcript linked above.

The Doomsday merchants are going to be severly disappointed ...that is my belief...but they will keep peddling whatever they can.

I hope Simmons with his BP short position gets severely burned.

I would suspect DougR is playing the same game.

Been a comedy of errors so far. See no reason why it would stop now. Some people just may not completely grasp how far our civilization has fallen. But hey, you know where I am coming from by my ole sarcastic screen name.

I read thru the PDF so thanks for that.

And it was said that the purpose of the test is to reduce the pollution.

Not sure many on the Oil Drum had read the PDF.

Time to shut down here....will be back tomorrow.

I really don’t see how inserting an 18 inch pipe in the sea bed can compromise the ocean floor.
Nukeing it? Now that may cause unforeseen problems!

To me the relief well is just happy-happy, hope-hope nothingness to persuade us they did everything they could short of nuking it. If the seabed floor as been breached - and it has because I saw it in early May and they have now admitted it this week - that HUGE oil and gas deposit is going to enter into the Gulf. I think they are actually drilling that “relief well” to position the nuke.

I agree with you that it is a risky thing to do. The methane deposit under the US travels from Texas to New York and I think they could set the whole thing off. They used to believe the deposits were separate, encased deposits but they found out in the recent past it is not. The methane freely travels from one deposit to another. I have not seen this discussed anywhere yet; I know it for another situation that I researched. I don’t know about the possibility of fall out. They say they will use a small nuke...

But if we fail to stop it with all the options they have, we are going to ruin the costal environments of many other nations with the gulf stream and they are not going to be cooperative with us doing nothing more to be safe. It is not only the US involved in this disaster if things continue as they are with an oil/methane volcano. I agree that ole Russia demanding that we nuke it is not a good sign for our well being. But the UN wants it nuked and the Democrats sent out Clinton to call for nuking it a couple of weeks ago. They are going to nuke it; I think they know they have to nuke it already because of the sea floor breach.

People on the coast need to be ready for this because it would not be wise to stay near the coast during this operation no matter what Obama says. I don’t think Obama and his Czars care if the people on coast are harmed or not given they decided to spray human populations with corexit so I am not sure they would do mandatory evacuations. They decided in a cost benefit analysis that the human life damaged by corexit was worth it when compared to the cost savings in clean up. I don’t think they will find anyone’s life worth saving with the massive cost of an evacuation.

I think they will bomb it in August and that everyone on the coast should prepare themselves for a quick, wise and hopefully, temporary move out of the area when this happens - NO MATTER WHAT THE GOVERNMENT SAYS. They already told people to swim in the poluted waters that EPA said were dangerous to human life! Michelle just visited and called for everyone to come on down and swim!

D-fendr, it is not a question anymore on whether the sea bed is breached or not. They have admitted that in passing and I saw one massive leak from the sea bed on a web cam.
What they are doing is preparing the public for the final solution, so to speak. They know capping the BOP is not going to stop the volcano. They know a relief well is not going to stop it either. They are drilling that think to position a bomb down there.

The pressure that was released with the drilling was more than they expected and it blew up the platform with an uncontrolable release of methane and oil. It is pushing up now and has breached the sea floor. They admitted that. I saw it on a cam.

I agree with you that nuking it will be a great risk. But I think they can’t just let it go and empty into the Gulf because it is threatening the coasts of every Nation next to the Gulf stream. They Dems have already sent out Clinton saying it has to be nuked to stop it. The UN wants it nuked.

I wish I could agree with you. When I saw Clinton out saying it has to be nuked... I don’t think you would call him a merchant of doom. I think he was sent out by the Administration to get us ready for the inevitable.
