McCain breaks away as critical support eludes Hayworth
Arizona Capitol Times ^ | July 2, 2010 | Jeremy Duda

First, it was Sarah Palin. Then it was Arizona Right to Life and the National Rifle Association. Most recently, the revered National Review gave its imprimatur to McCain.

When Hayworth entered the race in January, McCain was at his most vulnerable point in decades. Polling showed McCain had a lead within the margin of error and was struggling to redefine himself as a Republican loyalist. But polls now show McCain with a solid lead.

Baker said the McCain campaign may have engineered a sort of domino effect: Each endorsement shows the next group that backing McCain is a safer bet than it may have first appeared, and Republican voters seem to be following the same trend.

McCain has focused Hayworth’s reputation in Congress as a pork-barrel spender, a serious offense to many conservatives. And the senator has run an undeniably negative campaign against Hayworth, openly mocking him and attacking his credibility.

The McCain campaign has posted videos online poking fun at Hayworth for questioning the authenticity of President Barack Obama’s birth certificate, suggesting that allowing gay marriage could pave the way for men to wed horses, and especially for appearing in a 2007 infomercial urging people to take advantage of “free money” from government grants.

The infomercial for the National Grants Conferences has been the most damning revelation yet, combining the promotion of government spending with a host of informercial stereotypes. It prompted the popular FOX News personality Glenn Beck to declare that Hayworth’s campaign is over.

If McCain had a more conservative challenger, National Review wrote, the endorsement might have gone elsewhere. But while Hayworth’s record is conservative, the article read, it isn’t conservative enough to make a compelling case against McCain.

“He may not be Marco Rubio, but he’s not Arlen Specter either,” the editorial said of McCain.

” McCain used a water pistol against Obama and using WMD against Hayworth? “

Not strange at all. McCain has outspent Hayworth 6 million to 500 thousand.

12 to 1

Sounds like somebody is trying to sway public opinion to me.
Kind of like calling Florida before the polls close.

I agree with you. I bet a lot of them work for RINOS like McCain. That is his style.

McCain was told to use a water pistol against Obama. Who knows why?

Of course, that pig, Hillary, is loving it. It’s playing right into her hands.

If you want to know how Juan McCain really thinks and feels, and how he really wants to act but can’t at the moment, watch his human puppet in action, Lindsay Grahamnesty, who behind the scenes is taking his marching orders from McCain.

You mean the PRESS.... the MEDIA, who has been so ACCURATE and UNBIASED all these years.... THEY say something about McCain / Hayworth?

Well, then. I just better believe it.

Fact.

The whole country felt that way and that’s how we got Obama.

Maybe I was too obtuse.

My point being; McCain could have used more ammunition against Obama - why didn’t he?

You weren’t obtuse at all. McCain actually said we have nothing to fear from an Obama administration, and that Obama was a good family man. How do you run against somebody, and simultaneously campaign for them?

Well, McCain did just that!

If I had McCain’s health problems, and poor outlook for a future, I think I would have retired a long time ago.

You are exactly correct. Lindsay is doing the heavy lifting while Johnny is trying to fool the masses to keep his commie butt in office.

You misunderstand the game. John is running and the expectation is that his daughter, the future President of the USA will follow him.

She lacked the ability to carry on family tradition and be a Naval officer, but she can be a pretender and look towards the Presidency.

By the way, that is actually happening.

McCain is practically the twin of Specter. The NR has firmly moved left and has become a shill for RINOs.

Hayworth is a real conservative. The McCain political machine with a huge funding advantage has demonized and slandered Hayworth. McCain started campaigning against Hayworth before he was even nominated. This race is far from over. McCain is afraid to debate Hayworth, but he will have to. And that will be the turning point.

McCain couldn't even win 50% of the vote in the AZ 2008 presidential primary--the only top tier candidate of either party who couldn't win his/her home state with 50% or more of the primary vote. The MSM are the ones who helped the GOP settle on Maverick McCain as the 2008 GOP presidential nominee. Now that is really inexplicable how the party maverick who voted against the Bush tax cuts, drilling in ANWR, and supported amnesty, closing Gitmo, and cap and trade could be the nominee.

There are a lot of RINO trolls here these days. The Abramoff accusations are bogus too. It is amazing how many so-called conservatives are working with 0blahblah to bring down this country.

What I've noticed is that the Palin Platoon are the ones supporting McCain. Since Palin endorsed McStupid none of the PP's can bring themselves to go against her.

Founding Member of the Keating 5 Back in the old days, defendants in famous trials got numbers — the Chicago Eight, the Gang of Four, the Dave Clark Five, the Daytona 500. McCain was one of the “Keating Five,” congressmen investigated on ethics charges for strenuously helping convicted racketeer Charles Keating after he gave them large campaign contributions and vacation trips.

Charles Keating was convicted of racketeering and fraud in both state and federal court after his Lincoln Savings & Loan collapsed, costing the taxpayers $3.4 billion. His convictions were overturned on technicalities; for example, the federal conviction was overturned because jurors had heard about his state conviction, and his state charges because Judge Lance Ito (yes, that judge) screwed up jury instructions. Neither court cleared him, and he faces new trials in both courts.)

McCain intervened on behalf of Charles Keating after Keating gave McCain at least $112,00 in contributions. In the mid-1980s, McCain made at least 9 trips on Keating’s airplanes, and 3 of those were to Keating’s luxurious retreat in the Bahamas. McCain’s wife and father-in-law also were the largest investors (at $350,000) in a Keating shopping center; the Phoenix New Times called it a “sweetheart deal.”

McCain was not convicted of any crimes, though the Senate concluded that he exercised “poor judgment.” (Furthermore, he got off on some charges by a technicality — that he was still in the House when he took those vacation trips, and so the Senate couldn’t prosecute him. The House concluded that THEY couldn’t prosecute him because he had moved to the Senate.)

I have heard strange things about Hayworth so i am not surprised that McCain has pulled away. Ideology aside i would have loved a younger conservative to win this seat.
