A friend who is a riding instructor had a group of people out on a trail and a 28-yr-old horse that had never, ever spooked and was carrying a 9 yr old suddenly shied on a trail he had done a million times and then bolted. They found her shoes along the trail...but thank God, she’d been able to hang on. The horse ran back to the barn, as they always do, and the girl kept her head down when he ran in and she just was standing there when everybody else arrived.
I don’t know what makes horses flip out, and probably they don’t either.
Had a couple of those experiences myself as a kid. All you can do is just hold on as tight as you can, keeping as close as you can, and wait for ‘em to stop.
