Christie took early control on budget
The Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | 7/3/2010 | Cynthia Burton

Gov. Christie got the state budget he wanted, and now he's trying to blunt the effects of his severe cuts to towns and school districts.

Using his flair for the dramatic, the governor called New Jersey legislators to a special session during this July Fourth holiday weekend.

Their mission: Put a 2.5 percent lid on local spending, so that if local authorities want to spend more, they will have to ask voters' permission.

New Jersey residents, Christie said in a speech to the Legislature on Thursday, "can't be bound, gagged, and forced to endure ever-higher taxes without their consent."

A polished politician, Christie has molded the state's lingering fiscal crisis into a fiscal conservative's march through Trenton.

Explaining his call for the special session, he said, "I have called you back to Trenton during this summer holiday period, when many escape to the beach or the mountains, because for New Jersey taxpayers, there has been no escape. . . . We do not deserve a break when these taxes are breaking the backs of our families."

He began laying the groundwork for the austere budget months ago, and has been using high-profile venues to become the loudest voice in the room in the debate over it.

He is exactly what NJ needed! You should see the fits that the liberals are throwing here, now that he has cut their money supply off.

Me, too. He’s got a vote in Texas if he’ll run.

Big dude. He does not take any s*** from the Dems. People have said he is losing weight and it sounds like a low carb diet.

I like him a lot except: has to get better on illegal immigration & guns plus he is a major major Springsteen fan.

I mean WTF!? A smart guy has attended supposedly over 100 concerts by some Democrat loser with the lamest lyrics about being a loser and low life down on the Jersey Shore. LOL!

At least Ms. Cynthia Burton, Reporterette, isn't editorializing or anything.

Can Christie add the governing of Illinois to his government portfolio?

If anyone can fix New Jersey, he can. He was elected in spite all of the weeny liberals here in this state. Our previous Democrat governors were embarrassing and our taxes are out of control. I think the people in New Jersey have had enough, and I pray that the entire country will feel the same way in November.

Christie is just what the doctor ordered, and New Jersey will soon be an example for other states and the country to follow. If he will be allowed to finish his cleanup, then NJ will be back on the road to prosperity. Too bad he isn't POTUS right now - but perhaps someday?

Fiscal “bull dogs” have their place. We’ll need them, but they can be Democrats.

We need to get a Republican majority and a leadership of solid conservatives. The more conservatives we get in the Senate the better. Filibuster can be a beautiful thing.

I like Christie. I just worry about his other positions. We don’t need a fiscally sound Romney.

Our reporterette also forgot to remember that Democrats... who control the Legislature approve the budget.

The Governor just suggested it. They approved it and he didn't veto it. That's how American government works.

Would that she had an education about American government.

I would vote for Christie if he made it clear he was willing to shrink the fed and return the rights of the states.

That alone would get my vote.

Has Romney promised that?

Springsteen is an absolute uneducated moron. But, there is a NJ thing about him with the sound of the music, and not necessarily the lyrics, which can't really be understood anyway unless they are written down.

There is a shore mentality to Springsteen, and everyone who spent teenage years in NJ knows what that means. Christie grew up here, and Springsteen is in his blood from his formative years.

In a previous time, Christie may have been a big Sinatra fan, since he was also a NJ native and sang locally in the beginning of his career, too.

(I live here, but am a transplant from the Midwest. Been here long enough, though, and this is my perspective.)

I understand what you are saying. It is a Jersey thing. Soem people in Calif have a similiar thing for The Eagles but Springsteen is much bigger in Jersey.

He identifies his entire youth and NJ plus the Shore with Bruce’s swill.

Being Conservative means having to say “No, the government will not do this”. It takes some set of balls on Christie’s part to say no to people when they are the ones electing him.

He is doing a good job of making people understand that the people of New Jersey will be better off in the long run.
