The House voted 270-153 to restore benefits for more than 1 million people whose payments ran out in early June. The measure would extend the federal long-term jobless aid program through November and retroactively restore benefits to eligible people.
But the Senate has rejected several attempts to extend jobless benefits amid worries about record budget deficits, and it is not scheduled to address the issue again until mid-July.

>> As my severence package runs out 08 Aug 2010 I am happy to hear this news.
Why are you relieved about an extension?
Don’t forget forced employer-paid COBRA (which is is now at 15 months). The govt subsidizes small businesses with a COBRA tax deduction, but that assumes the business has a profit to deduct from. If the company is losing money (and thus laying off workers) the deduction is worthless.
Yeah, let’s force ailing companies that are tottering on the edge of bankruptcy to give free medical care to ex-employees for 1.25 years.
Contrary to what some folks think being "on the dole" is no vacation for most that I know. A fraction of your income but the bills stay the same.
Nope. Don’t pay anyone not to work. All should do public service 48 hours a week for about 60% of what they get.
I wonder what is going to happen in a few weeks when millions of households call in to their utility companies and say I can’t pay, etc.
It is very difficult to find a job as I am one of those looking as are many others I know. Things are not too great here in Phoenix.
I’ve been out of work for over two years. I was fortunate enough to plan for a rainy day and have kept my head above water through short term contract work and a hobby business. I am ACTIVELY Looking for a full time job. I have not collected UI for over six months and even then it was sporatic. I’m for cutting it off at 99 weeks.
Just my $.02
I suspect suicides and crime. I’ll join the former. Maybe the latter in a way before it ends.
That’s a depression for you. I also expect celebrations from FR types that will be glad to see leaches like me off the rolls.
That's the spirit! Don't overlook moving to a low-unemployment state like South Dakota, however. True, most jobs there are agricultural, but even if you want something specific, it doesn't hurt to go where the jobs are!
I say to people not to cast judgment on anyone on unemployment or food stamps for that matter unless one has been in the situation. Losing a job, unemployment (here, the most one can receive is $240 per week!) and having a family and trying to make ends meet is almost impossible.
That unemployment money has gone to pay the utilities and a house payment.
A typical day for myself and many others I know is look for a job during the day, up in the middle of the night looking at job postings, sending resumes, completing applications online, etc. This is a non-stop job and consumes much of anyone’s time. It is exhausting.
If there were jobs, so many would be happy to accept one but it appears as though there are not many.
I was approved for Social Security Disability a few months ago. With my husband's salary and my check, we make it. I remember how crazy it was when I got my approval paperwork, stating that I was disabled. Talk about mixed emotions. Of course I wish I never got sick, but having a check that I can count on sure takes the stress off an already terrible situation. Off topic, but just relating. I guess if you're going to become sick, do it while O-Blama is in office.
I got my ass handed to me by freepers that live well and say that this is some burdon on them to pay. Frankly, they’ll never see it as it’s a tiny blip on the budget.
This ruthlessness is bad form in this economy. I’ve said many times when it’s a normal situation and unemployment is under 7% that these extensions aren’t probably needed very much. To cut them now though, that’s just nasty business after the bailouts, TARP, and so on.
I’m doing my best not to go into that. I have a severe anxiety order which could be covered, plus epileptic seizures which are not covered. Of course, none of that factored into why I was laid off before (the costs involved for treatment, surely never considered /s).
These younger folks who have a job will one day find out what it’s like not to have one. And someday they’ll learn that it’s a lot easier to find a job when you have one. But I guess they’re not “compassionate conservatives”. Either that or they don’t realize this also cuts people off who’ve only been drawing the checks for 26 weeks.
I’ve posted several times to those who come on here chastising people about getting unemployment and saying things like “get cracking” to put out some resumes and see what they get. I haven’t had any takers yet. And if I do I hope they’re honest.
There are no jobs. Especially for older people. No company will hire an older person who more than likely will have health issues before the younger applicants. So I wonder what will be posted on here when they’re friends and relatives lose their jobs and start committing suicide. Some people need to think before they post.
That’s what I’ve been saying. The republicans jumped as high as they could when W said “jump for TARP”. Now all of a sudden they’re fiscal hawks. This is not the issue to die for. Again, republicans either aren’t very bright or they’re all phonies.
By the way, join the “latter” if you have to. In fact, steal from those who are fat and happy. But do NOT join the first group. I believe God would frown on that but He would not frown on a man doing whatever he has to do to feed his family.
Trying, hard. I have family support, so all isn’t lost. But I hate to even accept it.
We are closer now to that ideal than we have ever been. We are not going to descend those stairs that we so painstakingly climbed. The devil cannot have the hindmost. They are Americans and we will circle them and protect from all evil. Unemployment insurance is there because we want it to be there. It is neither welfare nor charity. It is part and parcel of being a citizen of this great Republic.
It is Republicans who get to say what is or is not Republican. You have violated no morality, you have caused no burden that we are unwilling to bear. We welcome you to Services on Sunday and hope to see you soon at work on Monday.
May fortune smile and may God Bless.
