June 16: U.S. Central Commander Gen. David Petraeus testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, before the Senate Armed Services Committee. (AP)
A military source close to Gen. David Petraeus told Fox News that one of the first things the general will do when he takes over in Afghanistan is to modify the rules of engagement to make it easier for U.S. troops to engage in combat with the enemy, though a Petraeus spokesman pushed back on the claim.
Troops on the ground and some military commanders have said the strict rules -- aimed at preventing civilian casualties -- have effectively forced the troops to fight with one hand tied behind their backs.
The military source who has talked with Petraeus said the general will make those changes. Other sources were not so sure, but said they wouldn't be surprised to see that happen once Petraeus takes command.
Instead of killing the Taliban, we're going to grant them citizenship, register them as Democrats and hand out absentee ballots.
Probably.
Bush’s general, ergo Bush’s fault no matter what the changes turn out to be.
Heads up (( ping )).
If it is to allow the soldiers to fight and perhaps win, then McCrystal has had a win in my book.
Absolutely! Good call...
On again now!
My bet is that Petraeus used that leverage, demanding changes in the ROE or he wasn't going to take that job. The backstabbing is yet to come.
FYI- let’s hope this is meaningful.
Kill ‘em all and let God sort ‘em out later?
If you think we can “win” in that tribal, corrupt, medieval society, you are heading for a major dissappointment. They are are the graveyard of empires, ROE or no ROE.
Perhaps Petraeus made that a deal breaker?
“Listen sir, I know this sounds like crazy talk, but if I take the job, I need the troops to be able to...well...defend themselves and kill the enemy.”
See #19
Conservatives are so gulliable. Now..just because Obama has put a new bureaucrat in charge, they are suddenly cheerleaders for Obama’s war (the longest one in American history) again.
You can win anyplace. It’s a question of how far you’re willing to go.
“Nuke ‘em ‘til they glow” would be a win in some circles.
Sure. With the following provisos:
Enemy must have his rights read first.
Washington lawyers must be contacted and approve by a supermajority.
Finally, there is to be NO (count it) NO collateral damage.
If there is any violation of the above, prepare to be brought home for a court martial and prepare to start making small rocks out of large rocks. /sarc
Dammit, let's fight to win or bring the troops home.
I would love to hope that Petraeus exerted some pressure on 0. Someone needs to.
I hope this is good news . . . . .
