AS in Computer Science, from 1996. Solid experience since then at multiple fortune 500’s and tiny companies, 2-4 years each.
Would you like fries with that
in a US accent! Perish the thought!
We got rid of the illegals, but now there are Americans to do the jobs Americans won't do.
Should have thought about that in November '08.
I know in this area, $10-12 is SOP for long time no-skilled phone workers.
I recently graduated with a BS in Computer Science.
I don't know what state you're in, so I can't comment on the local or regional economy where you are, but things are just fine here in Northern Virginia.
IMO, you should resurrect your transcripts and try applying as a transfer student at a major state school. You will probably be eligible for practically every education grant program (federal, state, institutional) out there, covering tuition, fees, books, room, board, a personal expense allowance, and health insurance. Some schools will also cover a personal computer. Finish your BS, and then use your school's career services (including career fairs) to get a job.
CS/IT is hot right now (though, like other fields, it's still dependent on the region) but here in Northern Virginia salaries start in the upper 50s to low 60s plus benefits, and you already have tons of experience, which would put you ahead of your peers (my age or younger).
Get help if you are depressed. It works.
It’s nothing more tha sticks, some concrete and a roof. You can rent a studio before your credit goes to hell. Suicide? Not when there’s always something (or someone) to laugh at tomorrow. Go to Wall Mart and spend the afternoon people watching...you’ll soon feel better about yourself.
Besides...we need your vote to get this country back on track. That alone is a reason to live.
You haven’t mentioned your faith and trust in God. Pray as hard as you have ever prayed, really let your heart out. God is listening, the key is your receiving.
I have a good friend that lives near the Western Wall and I’ve asked him to pray for me there in Jerusalem. It has helped me in the past, and I’m hoping it will again. They put pieces of paper with the prayed into the wall for you.
Thank you, I’m working on it. The situation is terrible now, as it is. I’m praying to G-d and asking a Jewish friend in Israel to go to the Wall and offer a prayer in my name, which I usually never do. I feel usually way way too lousy to ever ask the Lord for such a small thing. But at this point, I hope he helps.
You don’t understand. God needs YOU to pray and hard. You are in charge. Even if you are not familiar with it. It will come to you. He can feel pain, discomfort and sadness. It is sincere, so must you be.
I’m in California, and $12 an hour after taxes comes out to about $375 per week. (That’s assuming the employee doesn’t have to partly pay for medical benefits, if they are offered. Most do.)
$375 X 4.357 = $1633.88 per month.
Minimum rent for a 1 bed/1 bath in most areas of CA is about $1,100 in a decent, non-gang infested neighborhood.
Also, no one is hiring people in their 40’s and 50’s with a degree because they know those people are going to bail as soon as something better comes along.
Most people would have to work 70+ hours per week at that rate just to squeak by and live paycheck to paycheck.
Those $12.00 per hour jobs are entry-level jobs for high-school/college kids or PT jobs for those on SS
Try living on $1600 per month - Rent/mortgage, food, gas, insurance, medicine, etc...and forget about having any kind of life.
Like I said, there are no jobs out there, not any that pay anywhere enough to live on, especially in CA, where the Unemployment rate is over 12.0%
I was actually considering moving to Idaho, but after crunching the numbers, I would make less money, and my cost of living would be lower, but not nearly enough to justify the move.
If I’m going to squeak by, I might as well do it where the weather and scenery is nice.
Oh, honey! Ask the Lord for any and all things and never feel bad about it.
Brace yourself for His answer though. It isn’t always what you might have thought!
There is never a time that you can’t seek the comfort of His arms. Believe me, I know. I’ve had a horrible last two years, stroke, lost my job, lost my dad, totally disabled now and having to depend on people and things that I never would have though would happen.
Only, and I mean only by my faith did the Lord manage to drag me kicking and screaming sometimes forward. Every now and then, He has to do it again. Just go to him. You’ll get an answer. I’ll pray for you.
One lesson my RADAR mentor from Michigan told me back in the 80’s. The ability to go where the jobs are is critical. We were in AZ at the time. I left AZ in 1998 in search of a more stable work base. I found it. (He passed in 1989 and gave me some very valuable advice.)
All it means is sometimes staying put will destroy you.
How come illegal aliens can easily do it?
My guess is that they are willing to live in clown houses, car pool, walk, bicycle, eat beans and rice and lower their standards by spending all that is left on beer and lottery tickets. It can be done, we just believe that we have a birthright not to have to live that way. Unfortunately, your neighbor voted for everyone to have a 3rd world level life-style when they traded in that birthright for the fleeting image of being hip and cool in the eyes of their peers.
Seventy hours at $12.00/hr. (counting 30 hours of overtime) is $1,020.00 gross per week, or $54,060.00 gross per year.
I suppose one would be living paycheck to paycheck (or worse) if they feel the need to give the government interest free loans through excessive withholding, feel entitled to living the middle-class lifestyle they have been accustomed to, and feel the need to pay for the government safety net while refusing to use it.
Like I said, there are no jobs out there, not any that pay anywhere enough to live on
As I wrote at post 40: "depends on where you are looking."
Unemployment here in Northern Virginia is 4.5-5.0 percent.
And eyedigress (at post 55) is right: "The ability to go where the jobs are is critical."
It humbles me somewhat to feel so bad after knowing you and others are going through such hardships. I’m trying to stay strong, I spoke to my mom for a long time and it was up and down and eventually turned out for the better. I’m no longer ‘young’ at 36, but I do need a lot of support.
God seems distant since I’m a person a science and focus on physics and computers. I try though. Thanks again.
Once someone has been out of work for a while (expensive) to “go where the jobs are” isn’t always possible, and isn’t always viable as they may have elderly relatives that they need to care for.
Like I said, I considered moving to Idaho or perhaps Utah, but it also takes money to pack up and move, but relocating is expensive, and if you are have a mortgage, it might not be possible to relocate due to the lack of buyers in today’s market.
Then there are medical issues for older people, finding a new doctor, etc...
There are many factors involved in relocating.
Most people will try to wait out the recession instead of relocating.
Again, saying “Take a lessor paying job” or “move where the jobs are” isn’t always a viable option for many.
If I were 20 or 30 years younger, I would be more inclined to change jobs/careers and/or relocate, but when you’re in your 50’s, it’s not such a cut and dry issue.
If I were 25, I would sell my belongings, buy a pickup truck and travel trailer/5th wheel, and head to where the grass is greener.
This is not a good issue for Republicans to block. The MSM is making them sound like they don’t care about the unemployed. Or at least the Republicans need to come out and explain their opposition. Sometimes they are just plain dumb!
