Legislation to extend unemployment subsidies for hundreds of thousands of Americans who have exhausted their jobless benefits teetered on the edge of collapse on Thursday, as Senate Democrats and Republicans traded bitter accusations about who was to blame for an eight-week impasse.
Senate Republicans and a lone Democrat, Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska, joined forces to filibuster the legislation in a procedural vote on Thursday. Visibly frustrated, the majority leader, Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, said he would move on to other business next week because he saw little chance of winning over any Republican votes.
The procedural vote was 57 to 41, with the Democrats falling three short of the 60 votes needed to advance the measure.
Youll hear a lot of excuses, Mr. Reid said at a news conference following the vote. The bottom line is the minority just said no.

Awesome.
Finally!
Sooner or later all heck is going to break lose. There are not enough jobs out there for the people who want to work.....need to work.

Good news, indeed. Thanks for the post.
And remember *this* vote when you read about all those doomsday lame-duck-congress scenarios — implementing an AMT between November and January, and so forth.
There are not enough jobs out there for the people who want to work.....need to work.”
Yet our Secretary of Labor is using our tax dollars to run TV ads including a number where “undocumented workers” can call and register complaints about not receiving fair pay and we are paying for her rapidly balooning staff to handle the calls!
aww geez... now people will be forced to get a job.
those evil republicans!
/s
gosh... if people have to get a job... i hope hillary’s walmart buddies haven’t shipped all the jobs offshore.
Pay for it by cutting something else ad there’d be no problem.
The dems both don’t wat to do that and are angling for a cheap election issue, figuring they can suck people into sympathy votes.
No Azzhole Harry. You have the majority and you failed to turn out the vote.
The GOP is powerless at this time.
This was a bumper sticker I saw in Westlake, OH. yesterday...
Disasterous for me, when the money runs out I’m screwed.
“Disasterous for me,when the money runs out I’m screwed” ...well its always disasterous for me because I’m an independent contractor...no unemployment given to me ever...and I have to pay double social security taxes when I do my taxes. And you know what? I’ve always survived without the government handouts....and believe me I’ve endured the hard times. I’m not making light of your situation, but there are people out there who really know how to “work the system”. This country needs jobs, plain and simple.
The Dems and the media are running with this like crazy. It was really the senate dems, who loaded it wigh so much spending-even the rhinos could not support it.
Dems are to blame, but the Republicans are getting killed now in the press. This is bad pr and will cost us huge
If the economy is booming the way the Rats and MSM are claiming then they don’t need unemployment extensions.
This was a horrible place to ‘take a stand’ on. Politics are literally going to kill a lot like me who run out in a few weeks, there are no jobs and suicides will skyrocket.
Me, too. Mine have ran out.
The republicans are really a principled bunch, huh. They spend like democrats when a republican is in the white house. They vote for bail outs when a republican is in the white house. And now they’ve got principles.
Don’t consider suicide, my friend. Things will work out. The truth of the matter is it’s not going to be long before everyone is dependent upon the government then CRASH! It’ll be the survival of the fittest.
