Legislation to extend unemployment subsidies for hundreds of thousands of Americans who have exhausted their jobless benefits teetered on the edge of collapse on Thursday, as Senate Democrats and Republicans traded bitter accusations about who was to blame for an eight-week impasse.
Senate Republicans and a lone Democrat, Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska, joined forces to filibuster the legislation in a procedural vote on Thursday. Visibly frustrated, the majority leader, Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, said he would move on to other business next week because he saw little chance of winning over any Republican votes.
The procedural vote was 57 to 41, with the Democrats falling three short of the 60 votes needed to advance the measure.
Youll hear a lot of excuses, Mr. Reid said at a news conference following the vote. The bottom line is the minority just said no.

Well now, that just makes a heck of a lot of sense ... the "MINORITY" won! I get that, they have the MAJORITY and can do anything they want to but the 'MINORITY' won!
Oh brother ...
Take it out of the union bailout funds. I’m sure the unemployed won’t mind!
I’m not making light of your situation. I don’t know how much money you took in from unemployment. In Alaska, the max is about $950/mo unless you get child credits for about $150 ea. But my guess is that your unemployment income was not a lot of money. There really are a lot of things you can do to start your own small business.
It may not be glamorous but you can clean houses, paint, wash windows, do yard work, check out Kelly Services, start a bike repair shop in your garage, fix fences, do handyman work. It’s hard to starve if you are willing and able.
Here’s another one that I did in between jobs for a year and a half. I went to the local harbors and washed/detailed boats. Lots of business there. I charged $60.00/hr.
I bought a house last year with less than $1k mortgage, and got laid off 6 months later. Unemployment has allowed me to stay in it. If it runs out, I’ll be forced to suicide. Got nothing else to live for really.
Forced to suicide? Over a $1000 mortgage? Dang.. You can make that much babysitting in that house you have. Get out there and do something. You obviously have internet; what does that cost? I’m betting you also have cable TV, cell phones and numerous other things that aren’t worth DYING over.
Hey Harry: THISH WAR IZH LOSHT.
Here’s the title of AP’s version of the story: “Republicans kill Senate jobless aid measure”
Yes, but not before they take a few politicians with them first.
When people lose their homes, cars, land, guns and food, they crack.
Sharp as an orange.
(and obviously has never heard of public libraries).
I’m still holding out on my services, the UI is through the end of the month and they’re having to rebuild my charge debt again. The thing that’ll kill me is the mortgage payments. I can get by on $1600 a month. I was making 42k at the last place, lost it september. Been looking since except when I had a surgery that took me out for 1.5 months.
The situation out there is dire, and the senate is a total disgrace and so are those leaping on the chance to see their fellow Americans that have worked get kicked off after less than a year on UI in this economy.
I got laid off last year for the second time in 6 years. Jobs we lost went to Juarez, so we qualified for the displaced worker program. I decided to take the opportunity to go back to school and get a degree. My wife is making decent money, so with the $630.00 a month I’m getting in unemployment, we’re getting by ok. Mine mainly goes for gas, car insurance, medication and COBRA payments through the IRS program. If I lose my unemployment, we’ll be pretty screwed. I won’t have insurance, I won’t be able to afford half my meds, and I’ll have to quit school and try to find some sort of job, which is like looking for hen’s teeth in this part of the world. And I’ll have to pay all the tuition back for something that won’t do me any good if I don’t finish it.
I’m single and paying cobra with some family help. The cobra will go up to $400 after the subsidies run out in Dec, and then gone in Feb. I have health issues, not good.
Being single with a house and minimal family support, I was getting by ok with UI. If this really runs out, I don’t think I’ll live all that long.
Good!!!!
I dont want to sound like a jerk, but you can go a long time before they are going to boot you out of the house. If you are current now, they wont really even notice for a couple of months. Call them as soon as you are going to miss. They hear worse stories than this every day.
It is not that bad.
It is never as bad as it seems, nor as good as your dreams.
I’ve got asthma, and the meds run 220+ dollars a month without COBRA. I’m also on diabetic pills and arthritis meds, along with high blood pressure. I know what you mean. Plus, the test strips aren’t cheap without insurance.
I have a seizure disorder and it’s not cheap to control. This stress is making it worse. The way I’m l seeing it, there aren’t any good (=$12+hour jobs) out there for 2 year degree+10 year experience.
I pray they extend this at least until the end of the year. We’re getting slammed by democrat policies and it’s so sad that we’ll not get jack after all this for the hurting ones.
The problem is that there aren’t any jobs out there.
Ask anyone who is out of work.
If the Senate can push Health Care thru with 51 votes, why not UI benefits?
I know people who are eligible for many more weeks of UI, but they funding is being squabbled over and in the meantime, they have no money coming in.
None.
Nada.
Zip.
And they are/were living from UI check to UI check.
Some are on maintenance meds and will become very sick very soon.
Hospitals are going to be flooded with people who don’t have the money for their meds.
And no one wants to hire you if you are over 50 years old.
Buy ammo, because it’s about to hit the fan.
Don’t say “Get a job” unless you have one to offer.
The reality is that there aren’t jobs out there and no one is going to hire a 40 or 50 year old professional to work at a fast-food place or other similar scenarios, nor will working two of those jobs pay the rent/mortgage.
The money is there from the Trillion dollar stimulus package, so use it.
What's your degree in? If it really gets bad, you could always walk away from the house, get the four-year bachelor's degree, and use the school's career services and career fairs to get into a college hire program with a large employer.
Depends on where you are looking.
The local Sheetz (gas station and convenience store) where I am is paying $11 to $12 per hour plus benefits, looking for new employees, and it does have signs posted to that effect.
