Russia to buy 50 Boeing 737s worth four billion dollars

President Barack Obama on Thursday said that Russia was buying 50 Boeing aircraft valued at four billion dollars that could create 44,000 jobs in the struggling US economy.

Obama, speaking after White House talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, said the order was part of a broad array of major trade and investment deals between the two countries.

"Consistent with my administration's national export initiative, this includes the sale of 50 Boeing aircraft worth four billion dollars that could add up to 44,000 new jobs in the American aerospace industry," Obama said.

In a statement released after Obama's comment, Boeing said that it had signed a document with the Russian state corporation Rostechnologii "confirming the decision by Rostechnologii to place an order for 50 Boeing Next-Generation 737 airplanes."

The document was signed during Medvedev's official visit to the United States, the aerospace giant said, without providing further details.

"Rostechnologii's selection of Boeing airplanes demonstrates its commitment to deploying the optimal solution for the market needs," the Chicago-based company said.

Touting "the economic benefits and operating efficiencies" of the Next-Generation 737, Boeing said the planes would "directly support Rostechnologii's plan to provide Russian airlines with efficient and reliable airplanes that will help them to consolidate and grow their domestic and international operations."

"We look forward to continuing our long-term partnership with Rostechnologii and finalising the contract," the company said.

Jim Proulx, spokesman for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said in an interview with AFP that the 50 Next-Generation 737s were worth "3.6 billion dollars at current list price."

Commercial aircraft are often sold below list value.

Proulx noted the agreement signed was for the Russian state firm to purchase the planes, but further details needed to be worked out for a firm contract, such as which airlines would be taking the planes

Orders for just 50 airplanes is not going to create 44,000 jobs. It might help further job losses in that industry, but not new jobs.

Hmmmmmm "Boeing currently has an order backlog of 2,000 for the planes."

So how does adding another 50 to 2,000 equal a gain of 44,000 jobs?

Translation: Nobody wants to fly in a Tupolev or an Ilyushin, not even Tupolev or Ilyushin.

This must be what he sold out Poland, Czech and Georgia for, since he didn’t get anything on Russian support against Iran or even not selling the air defense system to Iran.

And in keeping with the Chicago way, one has to wonder whether Obama got promises of campaign cash from Boeing execs in return for delivering the Russian contract.

Divide 4 billion by 44000, and you get 90,909 which is the limit they could pay these peple and still not produce a single aircraft.

Now, factor in the costs of building the aircraft...

I think osama is off by a factor of at least a magnitude.

The maggot-in-chief probably had nothing to do with this deal, it’s probably been in the works for years.
Another lie by this SOB. Boeing is already punching out 737s as fast as they can. There won’t be any (much less 44,000) jobs created. I believe Boeing is at max production already.
Of course, the “saviour of all mankind” could always nationalize Boeing like he did the banks, car mfgs, health care, etc.
God save us from this bastard!!!!

This is definitely in the "created or saved" category; Boeing is looking at layoffs and a closed C17 line plus delayed deliveries (likely canceled orders) for the commercial line.

Wouldn't be surprised if they had 737s already in queue that customers would gladly defer to the Russians.

PS: I wonder if they plan to give one to Poland to make up for the one they broke?

PPS: I also wonder how much of that $3.6 billion will come from US tax payers in some form of a "loan"?

44,000 new jobs to build 50 737's when production lines are already up and running? And even if this ends up being for a newer version, they will simply pull people from the old lines to the new ones as they phase out the older generation model.

This is such a whopper of a lie, it's criminal.
