Gregg Allman Undergoes Liver Transplant Surgery
Rolling Stone ^ | 6-24-10

Posted on 06/24/2010 11:01:31 AM PDT by My Favorite Headache

Allman Brothers Band cofounder Gregg Allman underwent successful liver transplant surgery this morning, forcing the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band to cancel its performance at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival at Chicago's Toyota Park on Saturday. The Derek Trucks Band will replace the Allmans on the lineup, which also includes Jeff Beck, John Mayer, B.B. King and Buddy Guy.

Check out Rolling Stone's rundown of the Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

Allman is being treated at Jacksonville, Florida's Mayo Clinic after battling Hepatitis C for several years. In 2007, the singer was advised that the damage to his liver was severe enough to necessitate a transplant, and he went on a wait list for the organ. "I changed my ways years ago, but we can't turn back time," he said in a statement. "Every day is a gift, and I can't wait to get back on the road making music with my friends."

Adding that he hopes to make a speedy recovery, Allman said, "I feel pretty good, considering everything that's happened." Doctors notified Allman this morning that an appropriate liver had been donated and the surgery was quickly scheduled. "All I can really say is 'thanks,' " Allman said.

While the Crossroads date is definitely off, the status of Allman's two solo shows plotted for late September is currently unknown.

I like “Blue Sky”

You’re my Blue Sky
You’re my Sunny Day
Lord it gets me high
When you turn your love my way

I also love Whippin Post and Love is Everywhere. Great songs performed before Greg Allman died.

Based on his drug abuse and alcohol consumption, he shouldn’t have been on the transplant list. No non-celeberity would be.

No kidding. How many spare organs does the average celebrity go through anyway? How come they always seem to be at the top of every transplant list.

Your liver pays dearly now for youthful magic moments, but rock on completely with some brand new components.

Almost all older musicians live off the music that made them famous. If people went to see Zeppelin live who wouldn’t be disappointed if they didn’t play Stairway to Heaven? Likewise with Clapton, if he did a concert of songs only from the Cream era the place would still be packed. That’s why all they need is two or three good albums and they’re set for life.

I would love to see him tour with Winwood! (I heard some from Steve’s recent album and it was good.)

He’s a great player but he’s not exactly cranking out fresh new material.

He was up until very recently. He's still doing great shows an touring. He's organized 3 Crossroads Guitar Festivals. He's exploring new material. He's done some great shows with Jeff Beck. He's working with other musicians all the time.

And as for Beck, the guy is playing like a 25 year old and still producing good music and experimenting as always.

Yes Clapton isn't at the height of his creativity. But he and Beck and a few others are still out there producing great music. Contrast that with the junk that McCartney is doing. He's not even doing a good job on the old stuff. His concerts are a joke. It's embarrassing to watch the last few concerts (on PBS) that he's done. Yet, I cannot wait for the next Crossroads Concert. I will have to watch the DVD as I won't be able to attend. No, even when are past your glory years you can still be great as Clapton and Beck are. McCartney not so.

Was lucky enough to catch their March 2010 concert in NYC. It was a great show.

One of my all-time favorites is No One To Run With which they played the night we were there.

Best wishes to Gregg Allman for a speedy and full recovery.

Thanks for the great music.

David Crosby got a new liver about 15 years ago.

You could probably put together an entire band of celebrity liver transplant patients including Gregg Allman, David Crosby, Jack Bruce and Phil Lesh.

You could have Steve Jobs running the sound board and Linda Lovelace waiting backstage...

Tell me what McCartney has done in the last 30 years to compare to this.

I like “Blue Sky”

My favorite Allman Bros. song, particularly when I'm walking along the canals where I live. The guitar solo is incredible...wish it was added to the play list on Guitar Hero.

...I borrow my son's GH a couple times a year, it's a pleasant diversion.

Are you forgetting Tears in Heaven, written about his son Connor who was tragically killed by falling out of a window?
