PRETORIA, South Africa – Landon Donovan scored in the first minute of stoppage time off a rebound, advancing the United States to the second round at the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Algeria.

With the U.S. perhaps three minutes from elimination, Jozy Altidore was stopped on a breakaway by goalkeeper Rais Bolihi. Donovan hustled in and kicked in the rebound to win Group C Wednesday.

Yes... you chaps left it late.

This world cup seems very like World War 2. The French surrender early, the Americans turn up at the last minute and the English are left to fight the Germans by themselves...

For us to get really into Soccer would require MLS becoming more popular. If American Soccer interest is limited to international play it’s growth potential is limited.

Most people can’t name the best player on their local MLS team (or maybe even the name of the team).

The MLS season starts in March and ends in October or November. Overlapping then end of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. The end of the NBA and NHL seasons, most or all of the MLB season and into the NFL and college football seasons. There’s too much competition for them.

I couldn't have even knowingly answered "true" or "false" to the question: "Does MLS still exist?".

Indeed. A lot people I’m sure don’t even give a thought as to whether we even have a professional soccer league in the United States.

Their gambit of bringing David Beckham over here to attract attention to the sport was an expensive failure.

Hardcore soccer fans here in the US are more likely to follow the English Premier League, than the MLS.

Yup and good US players if they are smart are keen on going over there.

My brother is more into Soccer than me. He watches the Premier League and other European soccer, not the MLS.

He says the level of play in MLS is poor in comparison.

Not for David Beckham and Posh Spice. Call me crazy, but I don't even find Posh that attractive. However, I'm sure it takes a lot of MLS cash to keep her in style...

Yeah, I'm not into Posh.

He's cheated on her with more attractive birds.

I am surprised no one has been accused of being a “globalist” for even watching the World Cup. ;)

... I don't like soccer because there is not a lot of offense, low scoring and generally boring

I believe the baseball term for that is "pitcher's duel". I watched the Nationals-Royals game yesterday where Brian Bannister outshone Nats phenom Stephen Strasburg in a 1-0 nail-biter. Not boring at all.

Actually, if you were interested in chicks, wouldn’t you have taken aerobics?

Aerobics classes in college were good...

How exactly is soccer “forced” upon people?

But again, what can I expect from someone who reads U.S. Iraq policy into my statements when I never talked about Iraq.

Because, the rest of the world's (the world that is forcing soccer down your throat) reaction to Afghanistan vs. Iraq is different, how, again?

It’s “forced” on people the same way ice cream is “forced” on people. The smart ones decide not to eat ice cream if they choose.

I don't really care to rehash all the posts that I've had on this subject. If you're truly interested, go back and read my old posts and you will see what I'm talking about.

I’m sure that a lot of the rest of the world actually has reading comprehension and can read and understand what people are saying. It’s a skill you lack...
